Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Packing a Whole Lot In!
These past two weeks have been jam packed with lots of learning for our Grade 2s! We have continued our reading journey through the evolution of communication technology, looking at a wide variety of non fiction texts. We have explored multimodal media in this unit as well, giving our Grade 2s an opportunity to practise their digital literacy through navigating research websites and online books. We investigated how modern smartphones have revolutionised our communication today, especially compared to older communication technology.
Writing
We have introduced and practised a new writing planner for information reports, in which they shared their growing knowledge about the history of communication. In narrative writing, we have focussed on the importance of character in fiction. This was further emphasised in our author talk from Lachlann Carter, author of the Big Trouble series, where the Grade 2s had the opportunity to hear about his creative writing process and create their own evil chair characters (ask your child about their chair's fears, dreams, and skills!).
Maths
Our focus in Maths has been on addition and subtraction for the last two weeks. This includes using our ten frames, MAB blocks, doubles, near doubles, and number lines to practice different strategies for solving both addition and subtraction problems. We have been using single, double, and triple-digit numbers in our problems, really showcasing our deep understanding of place value.
Wellbeing
We have had a focus on strategies for facing conflict and difficult situations. We have seen the Grade 2s practising some of these strategies, such as breathing, walking away, or telling a teacher, when facing conflict at school. You can practise these strategies with them at home too!
Please continue to participate in your child’s reading practise and fill in their reading journals with all their progress at home. Thank you for all your support and we are looking forward to the next few weeks of learning!
