Summer Gala Sports Day - Day 1
On Wednesday 4 March, four teams- 48 Year 6 students- boarded the bus for Fairbairn Park in Ascot Vale to compete in the annual Summer Gala Sports Day. Students participated in Tennis, Soccer and Cricket in an action packed day full of serves, volleys, boundaries, runouts and goals galore.
Tennis
The NMPS tennis team consisted of six double pairings, Jasper/Vincent, Khang/Lucas, Andy/Maysan, Claire/Mahdi, Kalila/Olivia and Sarah/Tia. After quickly setting up the courts and sweeping off the water, NMPS played their first opponent for the day (bitter rivals across the Moonee Ponds Creek), Kensington. The NMPS Tennis Aces put up a great first round display with some excellent double play winning three of the four matches. Next up was Ascot Vale who then unfortunately trounced us by the same scoreline 3-1. In the third game we matched up against Debney Meadows and returned to the winners list winning 3-1. For the final match of the day, NMPS Tennis Aces put up their best performance drubbing St. Margaret's 4-0 with all four duos not dropping a set in a dominating performance.
Overall it was a great day of tennis action with NMPS finishing the day with three wins and one loss ensuring that we go into the second round matches early next term in a strong position to hopefully make the final. Well done to all the players and shoutout to the duos Jasper & Vincent and Khang & Lucas who are currently undefeated winning all three of their games. Finally a big thank-you to parents Felicity and Kristen for their support and umpiring.
Cricket

NMPS, we got talent, we’re the BEST! For the Summer Gala Sports Day, I was in the cricket team. The members are: Ian, Tanami, Benji, Davanshi, Shraviya, Ralph, Max, Eshaan, Louie and Pareen. We played a lot of great players from different schools and we tried our very best and had a lot of fun! We played with the spirit of cricket and we all took turns so everybody got to play. It felt so quick because we were having the best time and we just loved it.
Boy and Girls Soccer
NMPS sent a boys and girls team to participate at the Gala Sports Day Soccer tournament. The girls team consisted of Aisha, Charlotte G, Charlotte R, Emina, Frankie, Lila, Lisa, Mariam, Sophie, Tess, Yusra & Zuuyati. Although the team lacked some experience, they made up for it with boundless energy and grit. They girls played four games on the day winning two and losing two. First up, they suffered a defeat against Ascot Vale West 4-1 with Aisha finding a consolation goal. Next up they tasted success with a 2-1 victory over St. Margaret's with Lila scoring the opener and Aisha the winner. The win-loss pattern would continue with NMPS on the end of a thrashing from a very good St Mary’s side that won 9-1 with Aisha making three goals from games. In the final match NMPS recorded a thorough win over local rivals St. Michael's 4-0 with Lisa, Lila, Aisha & Yusra all scoring. The girls currently sit third on the table with another three games to play next term.
The boys team went into the tournament with lots of expertise with many individuals racking up years of soccer experience both in the school yard and out in club land. The team consisted of Alex, Ayhan, Brandon, Des, Felix, Johnson, Leo, Maxwell, Nathan, Nemat, Oliver, Ton. The boys started their fist match with a bang dismantling Ascot Vale West 5-1 with Ayhan scoring a brace, Alex, Maxwell and Nathan also scoring goals. In the second game NMPS ran into a very strong St. Margaret's side who ran out comfortable winners 4-0. In the final game NMPS played bitter rivals and neighbours St. Michael's in the Flemington Road Derby. NMPS dominated possession and shots on goal but could not find a winner and had to settle for a draw. At the end of the day the boys sit fourth on the table with four games to play.
Overall it was a fantastic day and everyone enjoyed the day getting to play their sports and supporting their peers. All students represented the school with passion and adhered to the school values. Well done to all!
