Exploring Connections to Country – Caring for Water and Oceans
Our learning at Kindergarten typically begin by exploring what it means to live and learn on Wurundjeri Land. Each morning, the Rosella group acknowledges Country and reflects on how we can care for the land, plants, animals, and water around us.
During our recent incursion with Great Western Water whom we also partnered with last year, the children explored why clean water is precious.
Using their bodies and imagination, they pretended to be raindrops, moving from the clouds to the mountains, then through rivers and pipes to the taps at home and kinder. This helped the children understand that water travels a long way before it reaches us.
Through stories and group discussions, the children shared ideas about how we can save water. Many suggested turning off taps quickly, taking shorter showers and using only the water we need.
During National Ocean Week, we extended our learning by exploring how land, rivers and oceans are connected. The children discovered that rubbish left on land can travel into the ocean and harm sea animals. They took part in a “Rescue Mission,” carefully freeing toy sea animals tangled in string and rubber bands and created their own sea creatures using recycled materials.
We also introduced a 'Green Transport' poster, where families vote each morning to show how they travelled to kinder. The children talked about how walking, riding bikes or scooters, and using public transport can help reduce pollution and care for our environment. Through these experiences, the children are developing a growing understanding that caring for water, land and oceans helps protect our world.
The Molesworth kindergarten children’s are all in agreement,
“We need to look after the land and water.”
