Art News

Errol St Campus

From Tess Vu, Senior school Art teacher

Year 3

Students have been exploring graffiti lettering. They designed their own graffiti-style names while learning about space, depth and shading to create layers and a 3D effect in their artwork. They started by planning their bubble letters in their new visual diaries and thinking carefully about foreground, middle ground and background to make their designs stand out.

As part of this project, students also engaged in thoughtful class discussions about graffiti in our communities. They shared their opinions and debated questions such as when graffiti can be considered art and when it may be viewed as vandalism.

In the upcoming weeks, they will be putting all these ideas and skills together to create their finished piece, which they are VERY excited to present to everyone.

Year 4- Geodes!

Grade 4 students have been expanding their knowledge of Earth Science by continuing their learning about rock formations in art. Inspired by the beauty of geodes, students created their own, using watercolour and salt techniques.

Students experimented with different watercolour methods and discovered how sprinkling salt onto wet paint creates unique crystal-like textures, similar to those found in real geodes. They also explored colour mixing to create analogous colour schemes, carefully layering colours to represent the natural bands and layers seen inside rocks. Once they have finished with the painting process students will mount and decorate the background.

It has been wonderful (and educational) to have students share what they have been learning about in science in a different setting.

Art Club

Art Club continues to be a creative space where students across year levels come together to make, share and learn from one another. This fortnight we were lucky to have two student-led activities.

Grade 4 students Miyu and Koko teamed up to share a tradition from their homeland. With the beginning of spring in Japan and the Sakura (cherry blossom) festival approaching, they planned a collage activity where students used tissue paper to create their own cherry blossom trees.

From the Grade 5s, beading expert Darcy ran a workshop with the help of her assistant helpers, guiding students step-by-step as they learned how to make a flower charm using beads. Students then turned their creations into keyrings to take home.
