Spotlight on Digital Technologies Learning: Foundation, Grade 1 and 2

Our junior students have been diving into the exciting world of robotics using Bee-Bot, Dash and We-do LEGO robotics — and the learning happening is incredible!

In foundation, Bee-Bots are helping students take their first steps into coding. These programmable touch robots introduce children to:

  • Sequencing and directional language (forward, backward, left, right)
  • Problem-solving and prediction
  • Debugging (fixing mistakes and trying again)
  • Spatial awareness and mapping skills
  • Collaboration and teamwork

Grade 1 students are extending their coding knowledge using Dash. With a block-based coding app, students program Dash to:

  • Navigate obstacle courses
  • Respond to voice commands
  • Use sensors to detect objects
  • Create light and sound sequences
  • Complete real-world design challenges

Our Grade 2 students have been exploring robotics using LEGO Education WeDo 2.0, a hands-on learning program that combines building with coding to develop important STEM skills.

WeDo robotics allows students to design and build models using LEGO components, then bring their creations to life using simple, block-based coding on a device. Students are exploring natural disasters through the creation of an earthquake simulator, early warning system, drop and rescue helicopter and a flood gate.

Students quickly learn that robotics is not just about technology — it’s about thinking critically, collaborating, and persevering when solutions don’t work the first time.
