Semester 1 is an extremely busy time for sport as we have all the school level events plus several Lockyer Zone (LZ) District events and Darling downs (DD) Regional carnivals. Below is a list of sports we have had students compete in:
Triathlon, Swimming, Rugby League, Football (Soccer), Touch, Volleyball, AFL, Orienteering and Cross Country.
Refecting back on our own Inter-House Cross-Country carnival was held on the last day of Term 1, our whole school was out and participating in the event. We were again joined by the local Primary schools in a for the Brisbane Valley Cluster competition. Attendance at the carnival was excellent and this made for great competition with parents from both primary and secondary schools in attendance adding to the great atmosphere. Congratulations to all competitors, in particular our age champions for their efforts on the day. The overall winning house for the day was Somerset House. Levelling up the major carnival count 1 - 1 with the athletics still to come. The Darling downs Regional carnival for this was recently postponed and will now take place on Monday the 25th May, so please be prepared if your child is involved.
Coming up also this term are the following events:
· DD Schools Intermediate Volleyball Cup – 21st May
· Somerset Cup Round 1 – 22nd May
· DD Cross Country – 25th May
· DD U12’s Tennis – 25th May
· DD U12’s Football – 28th May (Boys) & 29th May (Boys & Girls)
· Qld Volleyball Schools Intermediate Cup – 29th to the 31st May
· DD U12’s Touch – 2nd June
· U15 Girls Rugby League Karyn Murphy Cup – 18th June
Lastly, Athletics carnival hype is starting to build. I will be running nominations for athletics events during the Wednesday PDP class in Week 8. Nominations can also be made in person with me throughout week 8 for those students that miss out during PDP. The carnival is held over two days this year being June 25 & 26, which are the last two days of this term. Given the unpredictability of the weather I will still be running the high-risk event (High jump) before the main days in case of less than desirable weather at the carnival. I will also run the 1500m & 3000m race in the weeks prior to the carnival to allow for recovery time. These pre-carnival events begin in week 8 and a full schedule will soon be available on the TSHS website and Facebook page.
Moving forward I will be looking to use our Facebook page to promote sport and our sporting achievements more and more frequently with supporting photos to provide more timely recognition, so please refer there for more sports news and notices.
And as a bit of final encouragement for our budding sports stars and a motivational way to finish, just remember, “that you miss about 50% of the shots that you do take, but 100% of the ones you don’t.”
