AWE Camp - St George
Miss Angela Lynch

Our students recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the AWE Camp in St George, where they experienced firsthand the innovation, technology and diversity of the agriculture industry. Throughout the week, students visited a range of leading agricultural enterprises and learnt from passionate industry professionals.
The camp began with visits to Wilgunyah Station, where students explored Merino sheep production, shearing and wool classing, and Beverleigh, where they saw a SwarmBot in action and learnt about emerging agricultural technology.
On Day 2, students visited RDO Equipment and heard from the very knowledgeable Mick Kennedy about automation and the future of agriculture. A major highlight was the opportunity to drive the largest John Deere tractor currently in production. Students also toured Katoota Feedlot, gaining valuable insight into large-scale beef production and feedlot operations.
Day 3 focused on horticulture, cotton and aviation. Students visited Moonrocks, learning about the production of onions, garlic and pumpkins, before travelling to Balondale Cotton Farm to explore modern cotton farming practices. The day concluded with a visit to Precision Aerial, where students were able to inspect agricultural aircraft up close and witness one starting up.
On Day 4, students toured the Beardmore Cotton Gin, gaining an understanding of the cotton ginning process and seeing firsthand how cotton is processed following harvest. Students also visited Ag and Vet, where they participated in soil testing activities and learnt more about the importance of soil health and analysis in agricultural production.
Throughout the week, our students represented the school exceptionally well, embracing every opportunity and engaging positively with industry representatives. Many of the hosts and presenters commented on the outstanding behaviour, attitude and enthusiasm of the group, with several describing them as “one of the best groups of kids” they had worked with.
The camp provided students with valuable exposure to the many career pathways and innovations within the agricultural sector and was an experience that will no doubt leave a lasting impact.
A huge thank you to all of the businesses, hosts and organisers who made the week possible and shared their knowledge and experiences with our students.
