Children’s Reference Group
The Merri-bek Children’s Reference Group was established to encourage and empower children to build stronger connections with local government and have a say in decisions that affect them.
The key aims of the reference group is to:
- Increase children’s voice and participation in Council decision-making
- Promote children’s civic engagement
- Increase children’s leadership capability.
This year, Florence and Carlo, alongside 10 other students from schools across the Merribek area, had the opportunity to participate in the Children’s Reference Group. As members, they shared ideas and provided input and feedback on projects and strategies that Merri-bek Council is working on. Both Carlo and Florence have represented our school with great enthusiasm and excitement. They have done an amazing job.
Let's hear from Carlo about the meetings:
Once a term, Florence and I represent St Fidelis at Council, working with a group called the Children's Reference Group. We both had to give input and ask questions about many different subjects, such as meeting the Mayor and talking about what she does. We also asked questions such as what the most important thing is to do as Mayor and when you become Mayor. We also talked about how to connect the young generation to the older generation by giving suggestions such as community gardens and painting, and we also talked about how we can get suggestions from older generations. We both contributed to all conversations, learned new things, and showed what St Fidelis is all about through respect, kindness, and generosity.
