Level 5

Dear Level Five Families,

We hope you and your children are well. Thank you for your ongoing support in your child’s learning — we are grateful for the partnership and communication we share.

Coming up in the classroom:

Reading

Focus: Class novel and reading assessments: The Lemonade War. Please encourage your child to read nightly and ask a few questions about characters and plot to support comprehension.

Writing

Focus: Persuasive advertising, sentence structure and word choice.

Skills: Identifying ethos, pathos, logos, and precise, creative word choice. Students will create short advertising pieces using these persuasive strategies.

Speaking & Listening

Focus: Responding to text through partner reading and discussion. Students will practice active listening and giving constructive responses.

Spelling

Focus: Prefix: in, il, ir, im- meaning not. Ex. invalid, illogical, irresistible, impolite.

Students will work on accuracy, meanings, word origins, dictation and partner testing.

Maths

Focus: Order of operations, calculating time and elapsed time. Home practice with real-life time problems (schedules, elapsed time tasks) is very helpful.

Inquiry

Focus: 'Money Matters' 'Shark tank' group project. Students are collaborating in groups to research, create and advertise a product in a 'shark tank' style presentation.
