Level 1

It has been an exciting fortnight in Level 1! We have been busy learning, growing, and preparing for our upcoming performance of The Pirates of the Currybean. The students have been working hard to learn their songs and dances, and we cannot wait to share their efforts with you on stage!
Reading and Writing
Over the past few weeks, we have continued exploring persuasive texts, including I Wanna Iguana and Hey Little Ant. Through these texts, students are learning how to form opinions and support their thinking with reasons. This learning has transferred into their writing, where they are practising expressing their opinions and using the word 'because' to explain and justify their ideas.
We have also been investigating the features of non-fiction texts and how they are organised to help readers find information. Students have explored how authors use illustrations, diagrams, headings, and bold words to support understanding and communicate key ideas. It has been wonderful to see students developing a deeper understanding of these text features and applying this knowledge during reading activities.
Maths
In Maths, we have been exploring 2D shapes and their features. Students have been learning to identify, describe and compare regular and irregular shapes, as well as investigate different types of quadrilaterals. Using geoboards, they created a variety of shapes and demonstrated their understanding of features such as sides and corners.
Students have also been developing their understanding of positional and directional language through exciting Bee-Bot activities. Working collaboratively with a partner, they designed and programmed routes for the Bee-Bots to follow, using mathematical language to describe movement and location. It has been fantastic to see students apply their learning while demonstrating teamwork, problem-solving skills and persistence.
Inquiry
We have continued our exploration of fables and folktales in Inquiry. Recently, we read The Enormous Turnip, a story that highlights the importance of teamwork, perseverance and recognising that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference. Students enjoyed discussing the message of the story and the lessons the characters learned.
To deepen our understanding, we brought the story to life through a class performance. Working in teams, each student took on the role of a character and helped retell the story through role-play. It was wonderful to see students collaborate, build confidence and have fun while developing their speaking and performance skills.
