Year 3 News

We have officially passed the halfway mark of Term 2 and, as always, it has been another productive and busy week filled with rich learning experiences and exciting opportunities for growth.

As readers, we are continuing to enjoy the short novel Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon. Throughout our reading, we have been expanding our vocabulary and enriching our language skills by discussing and defining interesting words from the text, including scramblerummageancient and whine

As writers, we have continued to write summaries for each chapter of the novel, record our predictions and wonderings about the story, and illustrate important scenes from each chapter. These activities have helped us deepen our understanding of the text and engage more thoughtfully with the characters and events in the story.

As Mathematicians, we have been identifying and continuing number patterns such as doubling and halving patterns by following an algorithm. An algorithm is a step by step method for solving a maths problem.

For example, to identify and continue a double pattern the algorithm would be:

        Algorithm

  1. Read the number                                               10, 20, 40, 80, 120, 240
  2. Use the same number
  3. Add to the previous number
  4. Read the new number
  5. Repeat

We have also been following an algorithm to identify the multiples of 2, 5 and 10.

For example, to identify the multiples of 10, the algorithm to follow would be:

  1. Read the number
  2. Check the digit in the ones position
  3. If it is a 0 - it is a multiple of 10
  4. If it is not a 0 - it is not a multiple of 10

As Inquirers, we have been learning to identify the states, territories and capital cities of our nation by locating them on a map of Australia. Using a blank map, students carefully partitioned the country into sections and accurately labelled the six states, two territories and eight capital cities. To further develop their mapping skills, students colour coded each state and territory and included a detailed legend to support their work.

As Catholic learners, we have been introduced to the scripture story of  The Good Samaritan and explored the important message of showing kindness, compassion and care towards others, especially those in need. We analysed artistic portraits of the story and completed a See, Think, Wonder, Feel thinking routine to deepen our understanding of the scripture story.

As resilient learners, we have been exploring how empathy can be shown through the character strengths of kindness, love and social intelligence. Through engaging activities and discussions, students are learning about the concept of empathy and they are developing a deeper understanding of how acts of kindness, expressions of love and social awareness contribute to empathetic interactions with our peers.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are excited about the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Student login details, a personalised information letter and a Reading Challenge bookmark have been handed out to the students. Although not compulsory, it is strongly encouraged that students participate in the Reading Challenge as it broadens their knowledge and imagination whilst fostering a lifelong love of reading.  In Year 3 especially, students are transitioning into more complex texts, so the challenge supports them in becoming more capable and engaged readers.

This week our learning will include:

Literacy: Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon novel study

Spelling: Digraph ‘oi ’ as in coin

Maths: Data Representations

Inquiry: Exploration: How did it Shape Australia?
