Year 2 News

We are already half way through, can you believe it! Time really flies when you're learning and having fun.
As a Catholic Learning Community, we have been learning about what Eucharist means and how it brings us together as one family in Christ. Through the story of Jesus feeding the 5000, we have explored how Jesus showed love, compassion and generosity by sharing with others and providing all that they needed. This story helps us understand that, in the Eucharist, Jesus continues to nourish and care for us through the gift of Himself.
As Writers, we have been developing our persuasive writing skills by correctly using the structure of a persuasive text, including a title, statement of opinion, supporting reasons, and a conclusion. We have also been learning to use persuasive language features such as powerful words, opinion statements, cause-and-effect language and higher modality words to convince our audience. We will continue our learning of persuasive texts and try our best to improve our writing.
As Mathematicians, we have continued learning different subtraction strategies, specifically, Bridge Back Though Ten and Jump Strategy.
Bridge Back Through Ten helps students break apart numbers to subtract by first getting back to ten before subtracting the remaining amount. This supports students to mentally solve subtraction problems more easily.
For example:
14 − 6
14 − 4 = 10
10 − 2 = 8
The Jump Strategy supports students to subtract in smaller jumps along a number line to solve problems efficiently and show their thinking clearly. This strategy can also be used to complete two-digit subtraction problems by subtracting tens and ones in parts, helping students understand place value more deeply.
For Example:
46 − 22
46 − 20 = 26
26 − 2 = 22
These strategies help students develop strong number sense, solve problems efficiently and build confidence when working with larger numbers.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Subtraction
- Literacy: Persuasive writing
- Spelling: The digraph /ea/ making the sound "E" as in beach
- Inquiry: Technology
- Religion: National Reconciliation Week
Have a great week!
