Foundation News

In Foundation this week, we have been busy exploring, creating and learning across all areas of the curriculum. The students have loved participating in hands-on activities, sharing their ideas and showing wonderful enthusiasm towards their learning.

As Mathematicians, the students explored the topic of shapes. We investigated the properties of four familiar shapes through a variety of hands-on activities including a shape hunt, picture sort, creating our own shape pictures, and using playdough and matchsticks to make different shapes. Throughout these activities, students learnt how to identify the properties of shapes, such as how many sides and corners they have. We began by focusing on familiar shapes including circles, rectangles, squares and triangles before extending our learning to more challenging shapes such as pentagons and hexagons. We had so much fun learning and exploring through these engaging hands-on experiences!

As People of Faith, the students participated in the thinking routine “Visualisation.” Students listened to the Bible story The Road to Emmaus and used their imagination to visualise what they could see in their minds as they heard the story. They then drew their visualisations in their Religion journals. See below for some of their amazing drawings!

As Writers this week, we read the story There's a Bear on My Chair by Ross Collins. It was a fun and engaging book filled with rhyming words. The children were challenged to create their own rhyming sentence using the stem: “There is a ____ on my ____.” We had lots of creative ideas such as “There is a snake on my cake” and “There is a dragon on my wagon!” We are so proud of how well the students are progressing in their writing.
