Our Learning for Weeks 4-5

We can’t believe the Preps have been at school for almost four weeks already! They are settling into school routines beautifully and are building new friendships with a range of peers. The students have done an amazing job adjusting to school, as this can be a big change. While the new routines and daily learning can be tiring, they have shown great resilience and enthusiasm each day. We are so proud of them all!

In English, students will:

  • continue to learn the days of the week through our morning routines.

  • review reading and writing /Mm/ and identify where the sound is in simple CVC words.

  • learn to read and write phonemes /Ss/, /Ff/ and /Aa/ identify these sounds in simple CVC words.

  • identify main ideas and make text-to-self connections

  • explore nursery rhymes and identify words that rhyme.

School readers will be coming home over the coming weeks. We encourage families to create a regular reading routine, even if it is just a few minutes a day. Reading together is a wonderful way to support your child’s learning.

In Maths, students will:

  • continue to use the 100 days of school chart to count and order numbers.
  • develop their understanding of place value by exploring how numbers up to 10 can be represented in different ways.
  • learn how to form digits 0-9 correctly.

In Inquiry, students will:

  • listen to a story book about belonging and accepting differences.
  • discuss being a part of a community and how we all have differences and share things in common with each other.
  • discuss and draw a picture of their family (including grandparents, pets, cousins, carers) and how they like to spend time with them. They will share how they are different and the same with their peers.
  • explore community and the different groups they belong to (eg, school, sports groups, churches).

In SEL, students will:

  • enter the journey through the Kindness Kingdom, learn new ways to build their resilience and identify strategies to help them work through challenging things.
  • learn about identifying emotions of others and ways to show kindness.
  • design their own avatar which will lead them through the kingdom. Along the way, students will receive badges for their avatars to celebrate their learning and kindness towards others.

News and Reminders:

  • Please send school hats with your child. At Hillsmeade, hats are required to be worn during all recess and lunch plays. Students without a hat will be required to play in a shaded area.
