Cultural Connections-Ms Wang
In our beautifully diverse school community, many families are preparing for important cultural and religious celebrations throughout the year.
Events such as Chinese New Year, Ramadan, Diwali and Easter fall on different dates each year because they follow different calendar systems.
Here is a snapshot of how each celebration is dated and when it occurs in 2026.
Chinese New Year
Calendar system:Traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar (based on both the moon and the sun)
2026 date: 17 February. This festival begins on the new moon that marks the start of the lunar new year.
Ramadan
Calendar system: Islamic lunar calendar (based only on moon cycles)
2026 dates: Expected to begin on the evening of 17 February and end around 18 March (subject to moon sighting) because the Islamic calendar is shorter than the solar year, Ramadan moves approximately 10–11days earlier each year.
Diwali
Calendar system: Hindu lunisolar calendar.
2026 date: 8 November. Diwali falls on the new moon in the Hindu month of Kartik.
Easter
Calendar system: Calculated using the solar year and the lunar cycle.
2026 date: 5 April. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.
Although each celebration has its own meaning and traditions, they share common themes of renewal, reflection, gratitude and connection with family and community. At our school, we value the opportunity to learn from one another’s traditions. By recognising and understanding these important occasions, we strengthen respect, empathy and connection across our multicultural community.
