Homework

This week, our Year 6 homework started. There are 2 elements to homework for this term, neither is overly difficult or time consuming.

Our focus is on supporting students to work on time management skills and responsibility as we help them grow and develop throughout their final year of primary school, in preparation for high school. Homework will be handed out on a Monday and then also due on a Monday, so students have a full week to complete it.

If there is a reason that homework cannot be completed, we would appreciate a quick note in the diary from a parent/carer. This supports us in keeping our expectations consistent across the cohort.

The first expectation is an hour of reading across the week. This can be broken up into however is most manageable for students, depending on their out of school commitments. They could read for 20 minutes 3 times a week, 15 minutes 4 times a week or read for 10 minutes 6 days - however it works! We don't mind how the reading is done, as long as it is being done. Students have been shown how their teacher would like their reading recorded - whether in their diary, their homework book or on Teams.

The second element of our Year 6 homework will focus on supporting students’ social and emotional wellbeing, personal strengths, and healthy habits. As students enter their final year of primary school, we want to help them build confidence, resilience, and self-awareness alongside their academic learning. Each week, students will choose one task from the homework grid. These tasks are designed to encourage reflection, positive habits, and meaningful conversations at home. The activities are intentionally low-pressure and may be completed through writing, drawing, or discussion.

We encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about the weekly tasks. Your insights, encouragement, and shared experiences play an important role in helping them recognise their strengths and develop strategies for managing challenges. Our goal is to make Year 6 a positive, rewarding, and growth-filled year.

Survivor Day

As we prepare for our much loved 'Survivor Day' Inquiry unit, we ask that each student brings in a plain white tshirt that you are happy for them to draw on/paint/decorate. This will form part of their team uniform for the day. These can be sourced cheaply from Kmart/Best and Less/BigW or if you happen to already have one at home! If these could be sent to school when you have one, that would be greatly appreciated.

Learning in weeks 4&5

Literacy:

  • Developing accuracy in grammar and spelling, writing complete and meaningful sentences, and independently editing their work using correct punctuation.
  •  Analysing how authors use bias, exaggeration, emotion and language choices to influence the reader’s perspective, including distinguishing between fact and opinion and crafting persuasive responses.
  • Examining how spoken opinions, visual features, and illustrations position the reader, recognising bias and explaining how characters are portrayed.
  • Students are improving typing accuracy and speed by using correct finger placement, maintaining focus on the screen, and typing with greater independence and precision.

Mathematics:

  • Developing student understanding of decimals by modelling them in real-life contexts, particularly through length and measurement connections.
  • Strengthening student understanding of the decimal place value system, including representing decimals accurately and demonstrating their knowledge through visual models such as creating their own rulers.
  • Identifying factors of numbers and distinguishing between prime and composite numbers, explaining their reasoning with clear examples.
  • Building confidence placing numbers with up to three decimal places on a number line, using benchmark fractions and decimals to support accurate positioning.

Inquiry:

  • Learning how to manage conflict and challenges in teams in a respectful and constructive way.
  • learning how to generate better ideas by looking beyond the first or most obvious solution.
