Level Five

What an exciting and busy term it has been for Grade 5! We have packed so many fantastic learning experiences into Term 3, both inside and outside the classroom. From our excursion to IMAX and our Science Expo, to Book Week and our creative Theme projects, there has been plenty for students to learn, explore and enjoy. It has been wonderful to see students embracing each opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity.

We had an exciting excursion to IMAX in week 6, where students watched not one, but two incredible movies! The first explored Australia's unique landscapes and natural environments, with strong connections to First Nations culture and knowledge. Even better, we got to experience the movie in 3D! The second movie explored severe weather and the effects of our ever-changing planet. Students particularly enjoyed having some popcorn while learning about these important environmental topics.

We also enjoyed our Science Expo, where students had the opportunity to explore work created by every level across the school. Students interacted with videos, experiments and other exciting content created by their peers. We were also very proud to see some of our Grade 5 students selected for the Science Talent Search, giving them the opportunity to showcase the fantastic work they have been developing.

Of course, we also celebrated Book Week in week 7, with students and teachers dressing up as their favourite characters and enjoying the opportunity to discover and engage with new books. It was fantastic to see the creativity that went into everyone's costumes!

Writing

In Writing, we have been developing our skills in writing persuasive reviews. We began by reviewing one of our IMAX movies, then reviewed an award-winning children's book before finally writing a review of our class novel, Blueback by Tim Winton.

More recently, we have returned to Narrative Writing, revisiting skills we developed earlier in the year. Students have been putting their creativity to work while developing engaging characters, settings and storylines.

Reading

In Reading, we finished our class novel, Blueback by Tim Winton, before watching the film adaptation. Students enjoyed comparing and contrasting the book and movie and discussing the choices made when bringing the story to the screen.

We have also continued practising our comprehension strategies of summarising and connecting, helping us identify the most important information and make meaningful connections with what we read.

Maths

This term, we have been learning about units of measurement, including length, mass and capacity. Students enjoyed using rulers, scales and measuring jugs to put their learning into practice through hands-on activities.

More recently, we have been learning about location and coordinates, including plotting points on a Cartesian plane. Students have enjoyed using coordinates to accurately locate different points and shapes.

Theme

In Theme, we have been bringing our Geography unit to life by building our own sustainable cities! Students have been applying their learning about natural hazards, sustainability and how and why places change to design their cities.

Students have loved the opportunity to be creative while working collaboratively to turn their ideas into 3D models. We have been very impressed with their teamwork, creativity and problem-solving!
