Term 3 Wellbeing: Staying Connected, Supported & Well

As we reach the halfway point of Term 3, we recognise that this can be a challenging part of the school year for students, families and staff. The initial energy and excitement of the school year can begin to fade, while assessment deadlines, academic expectations, friendship dynamics, extracurricular commitments and the everyday demands of school can contribute to students feeling tired, overwhelmed or less motivated.

At this point in the term, some students may experience lower energy, increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, reduced motivation, emotional ups and downs or changes in their usual behaviour. These responses are not uncommon when young people are feeling under pressure or running low on energy. It is an important time to pause, check in and focus on wellbeing alongside learning.

Supporting Wellbeing at Home

Prioritise connection -Take a few minutes each day to check in with your young person. Rather than immediately asking about schoolwork, try questions such as “How has your day really been?” or “What has been the best and hardest part of your day?”

Encourage healthy routines - Sleep, regular meals, movement and time away from screens all play an important role in wellbeing. Supporting consistent routines can help students feel more settled and ready to learn.

Break things into manageable steps - When assessments and homework feel overwhelming, encourage your child to focus on one task at a time. Small, achievable goals can reduce feelings of being overwhelmed.

Make time for recovery - Students need downtime. Encourage activities that help them recharge - being outdoors, listening to music, spending time with family or friends, sport, hobbies or simply having some quiet time.

Notice changes in behaviour - Irritability, withdrawal, tearfulness, changes in sleep or appetite, reduced motivation and difficulty concentrating can sometimes indicate that a young person is struggling. A calm conversation and early support can make a significant difference.

Support at Saltwater College

Our Wellbeing Team is here to support students and families throughout the school year. Students can access support for a range of social, emotional, wellbeing and school-related concerns.

The Wellbeing Team can provide students with opportunities to check in, talk through concerns, develop strategies for managing stress and emotions, and support their connection and engagement with school.

Where a student or family may benefit from additional support, the Wellbeing Team can also assist with external referrals and connections to appropriate community services and professionals.

Families are encouraged to reach out if they have concerns about their young person's wellbeing. You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming to ask for support.
