Prep & Year 1 Visual Arts Weeks 5 & 6
In Week 5, our Preps continued their inquiry into the central idea, “We communicate our ideas, imagination and experiences through story.” Using colour and art, students explored how we can communicate different emotions and feelings. Students identified a range of emotions and experimented with using different colours to represent how they feel. They then shared and explained their colour choices, discovering that artists can use colour to communicate feelings and tell stories without using words.
Our Year 1 students continued their inquiry into the central idea, “Knowing our community’s past is important to inform the present.” Students used what they had learned about the past and present to imagine and create the Point Cook community of the future. They identified important places and features within our community and contributed their ideas to a collaborative class artwork. Students drew and created places that are important to our community, while also thinking creatively about what our community might need in the future. This collaborative experience encouraged students to share ideas, listen to others and recognise that everyone has an important role to play in building a community.
In Week 6, our Preps and Year 1 students got creative in preparation for CBCA Book Week, exploring this year’s theme, Symphony of Stories. Students used their imagination, along with technology, to create their own Book Week-inspired designs, celebrating the wonderful connection between stories, creativity and visual art. CBCA Book Week will be celebrated from 22-28 August (Week 7), and we are so excited to see our students bring their creativity and love of stories to life!
p
Well done, Preps and Year 1s! I am so proud of the creativity, imagination and enthusiasm you continue to show in Visual Arts.
Visual Arts Year 2&3
During Weeks 5 and 6, Year 2 and 3 students explored modelling clay through planning, designing and creating their own colourful clay sculptures. Students used their imagination to transform simple shapes into cute creatures, small pots and playful spiral snails.
Students first planned their ideas and
experimented with rolling, pinching, joining and shaping the clay. They then created their sculptures using bright colours and added details, patterns and textures to make each artwork unique. The focus was on creativity, fine motor skills, problem-solving and developing confidence with 3D materials.
Students enjoyed seeing their drawings become colourful three-dimensional creations and proudly shared the ideas and stories behind their sculptures.
Grade 5 & 6 Visual Arts
Over the past two weeks, Grade 5 and 6 students have been bringing their clay projects to life by beginning the construction of their final designs. Using the hand-building techniques they practised earlier in the term—including pinch, coil, and slab construction—students have carefully planned and assembled their creations while learning how to join clay securely and build strong forms.
Throughout the process, students have been refining their craftsmanship, solving design challenges, and considering both form and function as their ideas take shape. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and confidence grow as they transform simple pieces of clay into unique three-dimensional artworks.
Physical Education
There has been plenty of energy, enthusiasm and teamwork on display in PE over the last two weeks, as students across the school have been developing their AFL skills!
Our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students have been learning the fundamental skill of punt kicking—an important skill used in sports such as AFL and rugby. From "drop, kick and follow through" to aiming for a target, students have been working hard to improve their technique while having lots of fun along the way. Through a variety of exciting, modified games, everyone had the chance to practise their skills, cheer on their classmates and celebrate their progress. It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces and growing confidence each lesson!
Meanwhile, our Grades 3–6 students have launched into their AFL unit, focusing on both punt kicking and handballing. Students have been challenged to use these skills in fast-paced, modified games that encourage teamwork, communication and quick decision-making. Rather than simply learning the skills in isolation, students are developing their game sense by thinking about when to pass, where to move and how to create opportunities for their team.
One of the highlights this has been seeing students encourage one another, demonstrate excellent sportsmanship and embrace the challenge of learning something new. Whether it was a perfectly timed handball, a well-directed punt kick or a clever pass to a teammate, there were plenty of moments to celebrate!
We're excited to continue building these skills over the coming weeks as students grow in confidence, improve their game awareness and, most importantly, continue to have fun while being active!

Science P-6
National Science Week 17–23 August
Science came alive at our recent assemblies as our Primary and High School Science teachers joined in a wonderful collaborative effort to celebrate National Science Week! The aim was to spark curiosity, encourage questioning and, most importantly, show our students that science can be exciting, surprising and lots of fun.
Students were treated to a spectacular range of live science demonstrations, including the Magic Cup, Genie in a Bottle and the spectacular Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment. Each demonstration provided students with an opportunity to observe something unexpected and wonder, “How did that happen?” and “Why did that happen?”
Students watched with amazement as familiar materials produced surprising results. From mysterious changes and bubbling reactions to the dramatic foaming of Elephant’s Toothpaste, every experiment encouraged students to think like scientists — observe, question, predict and explain.
The science fun doesn't stop at the assemblies!
In week 6, students will have the opportunity to get hands-on during our Science Lunch Club activities. They will be able to participate in a range of exciting experiments and STEM challenges, giving them the chance to investigate, build, test, problem-solve and discover scientific ideas for themselves.
WELLBEING
It has been a busy and engaging fortnight in Wellbeing, with students from Foundation to Year Six developing skills and strategies to support positive relationships, emotional wellbeing and resilience. Across the year levels, students have been learning about their personal strengths, kindness, teamwork, friendships, stress management and ways to cope with challenging emotions and situations.
Foundation
Kindness, personal strengths and coping with fear have been the focus for our Foundation students. They explored how it feels to give and receive kindness and identified personal strengths such as bravery, caring and helpfulness. Students also practised simple coping strategies, including deep breathing and asking for help, and created drawings and classroom displays to remind them to use their strengths and show kindness each day.
Year One
Year One students explored friendship, kindness and personal strengths. They reflected on acts of kindness and identified actions that help them feel proud of themselves and others. Students also discussed situations that may feel scary or uncomfortable and practised positive coping strategies such as taking deep breaths, staying calm and asking a trusted adult for help.
Year Two
Year Two students explored kindness and personal strengths by sharing and drawing examples of kind acts. They identified strengths such as helpfulness, bravery and patience and considered how these qualities can support them when facing challenges. Students also explored ways to cope with fear and anxiety, practising strategies that encourage calm, safe and brave responses.
Year Three
For Year Three, teamwork, respect and meaningful apologies were key areas of learning. Through games, activities and discussions, students practised working cooperatively, listening to others and showing respect. They also explored what makes an apology meaningful and reflected on how our actions can affect others.
Year Four
Year Four students focused on changes in friendships as we grow and develop. They explored how friendships can change over time and identified strategies for managing these changes in positive and respectful ways. Students considered how communication, empathy and support can help them maintain healthy and supportive friendships.
Year Five
Stress management has been the focus for our Year Five students. They explored what stress is, where it can come from and how it may feel in the body. Students reflected on different stressors and experimented with strategies to support their wellbeing, including calming music, breathing, movement and other positive coping strategies that can be used in different situations.
Year Six
Year Six students explored how personal strengths can support wellbeing, resilience and coping. They reflected on qualities such as kindness, courage and responsibility and considered how these strengths can help them manage challenges. Students also practised a range of positive stress-management strategies, including exercise, self-calming, seeking social support and getting organised through planning. They began creating personal coping portfolios containing strategies they can use to manage challenges and support themselves and others.
Saltwater Students Prepare for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular
Nineteen of our talented students will take to the stage at John Cain Arena on Saturday 29th August as part of the Mass Choir for this year's Victorian State Schools Spectacular. It's the culmination of months of hard work — rehearsals began all the way back in February!
Recently, students put the finishing touches on their performance at a rehearsal held at the iconic Melbourne Town Hall, where they also had the incredible opportunity to meet Australian musical royalty, Chong Lim AM. Chong took the time to encourage our Saltwater students to keep pursuing their passion for music.
We are so proud of the dedication and commitment these students have shown, and we can't wait to see them perform on such a big stage. Good luck to our Mass Choir stars!
DANCE
Term 3 has been a busy term in dance with both Victorian State School Spectacular (VSSS) and Wakakirri as they come to light and hit the stage for their performances!
Wakakirri…..(Dance)
Our Wakakirri cast and crew finally hit the big stage for our 2026 performance on Tuesday 4th August at the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds! Leading up to this we had a busy start to the term with a few weeks of rehearsals before a full day of packing, travelling, tech rehearsals and our performance! Our students and staff all represented our Saltwater community, school, and families to the highest level giving it everything they had on stage and leaving nothing behind.
This years theme for Wakakirri was “Guardians Of Us”, and the feedback from both the Wakakirri ambassador and people in attendance regarding our performance titled “Always Here” was absolutely amazing. Everyone connected to our piece in many different ways and it even left some in tears as we took them on an emotional journey of a mother and her child as they navigate through the joys and hardships of lifestyle journey together.
On the performance night Saltwater collected these amazing awards for our 2026 Wakakirri performance…..
Wakakirri Show Awards 2026
-Storytelling Award for Story and Concept

This was our final Hub rehearsal which was also a dress rehearsal on a full sized marked out floor plan along with more schools also. This was to help prepare students and staff with all the final details from costumes to formations and transitions before heading into John Cain Arena next week for the big show!
Saltwater’s Mass Dance and Mass Choir students will be travelling to John Cain Arena next Thursday 27th and Friday 28th Aug for 2 full days of technical and dress rehearsals alongside 3,000 other students from across Victoria for this years Spectacular! These two long days will be followed by a huge day on Saturday 29th as they perform 2 sold our shows in front of 10,000 people! This will also be televised later in the year for the whole country to see.
Our Saltwater Mass Dance dancers for 2026 have proven to be the best team that has represented our school and community as yet, with a super high work ethic and work rate, with amazing energy, effort and team work, and have been placed next to the audience to help lead the way for others that are around them also. We are beyond proud of each and every student involved this year and can’t wait to see them shine so bright on the big stage next week!
Spanish
This week, Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students are learning about Spanish-speaking countries by locating them on a map, underlining their names and colouring them in.
Year 3 and 4 students are completing an inquiry activity, independently researching a Spanish-speaking country of their choice and discovering key facts about it.
Year 5 and 6 students are combining both activities, researching a country and then locating it on the map.
Students are developing their Spanish vocabulary, geographical knowledge and curiosity about the Spanish-speaking world.
