Year One
Reading
Over the past two weeks, our Year 1 students have been developing their comprehension and fluency skills. Students have been learning to ask questions about characters, thinking about how characters look, feel and behave, and identifying character traits. They have also been making text-to-text connections, comparing new stories with stories they have read before, as well as making text-to-self connections by relating events and characters to their own experiences. Students have continued practising reading fluently with a focus on reading to the end of sentences and rereading words or sentences when needed.
Writing
Our young writers have been busy taking their narratives through the final stages of the writing process. Students have been learning the difference between editing and revising. They have checked their writing for spelling, capital letters, full stops and punctuation, while also thinking about how they can improve their ideas and vocabulary. Students have then begun publishing their narratives, creating a neat final copy with illustrations. We have been reminding students that published writing should be easy to read, correctly punctuated, in the correct order and carefully illustrated.
Phonics
Our phonics learning has focused on the split digraph o_e, making the long /o/ sound as in phone, stone, bone and rose. Students have strengthened their decoding skills through sound boxes, real and nonsense word games, choral reading and sound searches. We have also explored how suffixes can be added to words, such as changing joke to jokes, joked and joking. Students have continued developing their spelling through dictation activities and practising high-frequency words such as one, then and had.
Maths
Our mathematicians have been developing their understanding of place value and location. Students have been learning to find 10 more and 10 less than a number, using MAB blocks and 100 charts to see how the tens digit changes while the ones digit stays the same. We have also explored ordinal numbers, using words such as first, second and third to describe the position of objects. Students have been learning to use maps and positional language to describe where objects and places are located, as well as creating and following simple classroom maps and directions.
Reminders
Year One Swimming – Our swimming program continues over the coming weeks. Please ensure students bring all required swimming items each day.
Year One Zoo Excursion – Our Werribee Zoo excursion is coming up on 1st September. Further information and reminders will be shared as we get closer to the day.
