Year Three 

Dear Year Three Families, we’re excited to share the fantastic learning experiences from this fortnight. It has been a busy and productive time, filled with exploration and growth. Students have continued to demonstrate the attributes of thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers by consistently challenging themselves and striving to meet their learning goals.

Reading

This term, Grade 3 students have been exploring books that help us learn about the past and understand how people’s experiences have changed over time. Through texts such as Kamishibai Man, students have been developing important reading strategies, including making predictions and inferences, clarifying unfamiliar vocabulary and summarising key events and ideas. Students have been using evidence from the text and illustrations to deepen their understanding and discuss how stories can teach us about different times, places and experiences.

Writing

In Writing, students have been using their research skills on their devices to explore an event, person or experience from the past that interests them. They then used their research to plan and create a narrative set in a time period of their choice. Students have been developing their ability to use information from the past to create engaging stories, while considering the setting, characters and experiences of people living during that time.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been developing and extending their multiplicative thinking. They have explored a range of strategies, including grouping, arrays, region model and fact families, to build a deeper understanding of multiplication and division and how these operations are connected.

Students have also been practising their multiplication facts, using strategies such as 0 facts, 1 facts, 10 facts, doubles, double and add one group, and double doubles. They are learning to choose efficient strategies to solve problems and becoming increasingly confident in explaining their mathematical thinking.

Inquiry

As part of our inquiry unit, “Experiences from the past shape the way people live and connect,” students have continued to explore how life has changed over time. Building on their learning from last week, they reflected on their own experiences by creating personal timelines and stories about significant moments in their lives.

Students have now broadened their thinking by reading and researching historical narratives. They are comparing the past and present to discover how people’s beliefs, daily lives, technology, clothing, communities and ways of communicating have changed over time. Through these investigations, students are developing an appreciation of how the past influences the way people live and connect today.

Reminder

Please ensure students bring their iPads to school fully charged each day. We regularly use our devices to access learning materials, Google Classroom, lesson slides and activities, so having a charged iPad is an important part of being prepared for learning each day.

We are looking forward to Book Week in week 7 (24th-27). The Book Week parade will be on Friday 27th of August.
