Year Six

Weeks 5 and 6 have been busy and productive for our Year 6 students as they continued their learning through our Sharing the Planet unit and prepared for Exhibition. Students explored how individuals and communities can protect and restore biodiversity while developing their research, writing and presentation skills. They also strengthened their understanding of location and transformation in Mathematics and celebrated Science Week through activities connected to the natural world.

Reading

In Reading, students examined nonfiction texts about threatened species, conservation programs, rewilding and habitat restoration. They evaluated the reliability and credibility of sources, identified authors’ purposes and compared the effectiveness of different conservation strategies. Students also practised identifying main ideas, skimming and scanning for relevant details, synthesising information from multiple sources and reviewing information for accuracy. These skills are supporting students to conduct effective research for their Exhibition inquiries.

Writing

In Writing, students explored conservation and the important role of First Nations Australians in caring for Country and protecting biodiversity. They revised simple, compound and complex sentences before researching and creating conservation posters using scientific vocabulary, clear organisation and hand-drawn diagrams. Students then began planning, drafting and publishing informative texts about the effects of human activity on biodiversity. They also considered different ways to present their learning, including magazines, newspapers, digital books and Prezi presentations.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students investigated location and transformation on the Cartesian plane. They developed their understanding of coordinates, axes, quadrants and the origin before exploring reflection, translation and rotation. Students described movements of 90 and 180 degrees and used combinations of transformations to create tessellations and other geometric patterns. Digital tools such as GeoGebra and the Tessellation Creator allowed students to apply their learning in interactive and creative ways.

Exhibition

Students have continued researching, drafting and refining their Exhibition inquiries. They are learning to select credible sources, record relevant information in their own words and communicate their understanding clearly. Students are encouraged to discuss their inquiry at home and consider creative ways to share their learning with the Exhibition audience.

Science Week

To celebrate Science Week, students participated in activities that encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking and an appreciation of the natural world. They also viewed an episode of David Attenborough’s Life in Colour, connecting their learning to biodiversity, animal adaptations and the remarkable ways living things survive within their environments.

It has been wonderful to see students becoming increasingly independent and thoughtful as they develop their Exhibition inquiries. They are asking purposeful questions, evaluating information and considering creative ways to communicate their learning. We look forward to seeing their ideas continue to grow as they move closer to presenting their Exhibition work.
