Year Two
Year 2 have been working hard this term and achieved wonderful growth in their learning.
Reading:
Over the past few weeks, Year 2 students have been diving into the wonderful world of Bob Graham! Through engaging texts such as Let’s Get a Pup, Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten, The Concrete Garden and How to Heal a Broken Wing, students have been developing their inferencing skills and learning to become thoughtful, curious readers. They have been looking beyond what the words tell us and using clues from the text, illustrations and their own knowledge to work out what characters might be thinking, feeling and doing. Students have also been learning to identify the author’s purpose and consider why an author has chosen to write a particular text.
We have also explored the power of visual literacy through Ella and the Ocean by Lian Tanner and Where the Forest Meets the Sea by Jeannie Baker. Students have closely examined illustrations, colours, facial expressions, settings and other visual clues to deepen their understanding of a story. We have been having lots of fun discovering how authors and illustrators can use descriptive language and detailed images to help readers create vivid pictures in their minds. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident at sharing their ideas, explaining their thinking and using evidence from texts to support their answers.
Writing:
Our Grade 2 students have been busy exploring how to persuade and inform! Building on our exciting human body incursion, students created vibrant persuasive posters to encourage healthy choices like staying active and hydrated, using catchy slogans and bold pictures.
They also stepped into the role of researchers investigating body systems on Epic and learning how to swap words like I and my for third-person language to write clear, factual information reports. Ask your child to share one cool fact they learned about the human body this week!
Mathematics:
Our Grade 2 students have been busy developing their problem-solving skills across both number and spatial reasoning!
In our unit on multiplication students used hands-on materials like counters, unifix blocks, and counting bears. Through number stories and whiteboard problem-solving, learners discovered how repeated addition connects directly to multiplication, recognising that four groups of three is the same as $3 + $3 + $3 + $3, or $4 times 3 = $12.
Students also learnt about geometry and location. Students learnt how to map routes around the school grounds. They also programmed Bee-Bots to travel along pathways, and practiced following and creating step-by-step directions. Along the way, students expanded their vocabulary with directional terms such as left, right, straight, across, and behind.
Inquiry:
Year 2 students have been busy being inquirers as they explore the fascinating world of the human body! Throughout our Inquiry learning, students have been developing their research skills by investigating different body systems, including the skeletal, muscular, digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. Students have been learning how to read information carefully, identify important facts, summarise key ideas and take useful notes in their own words.
Students have also had the opportunity to choose body systems that interest them, encouraging curiosity and independence in their learning. They have been asking questions, finding interesting facts and sharing their discoveries with their classmates. It has been wonderful to see students becoming enthusiastic researchers and developing the skills they need to find, organise and communicate information effectively.
