Creating a Safe and Connected Kindergarten Community

At Glen Bentleigh East Kindergarten, children’s safety and wellbeing are at the centre of everything we do. Creating a child safe environment is not only about policies and procedures, but about the everyday ways we support children to feel safe, respected, heard and valued within our learning community.

Through our relationships, routines and learning experiences, we aim to create a culture where every child feels confident to express themselves, make choices and participate fully in kindergarten life. 

A key part of this is developing strong, trusting relationships with each child. Educators take time to listen to children’s ideas, acknowledge their feelings and support them to communicate their needs. Children are encouraged to share their thoughts during group discussions, contribute ideas to our program and work together to solve problems. When children feel heard and respected, they develop a strong sense of belonging and confidence. 

We also support children’s independence and agency through everyday routines. Simple moments throughout the day provide meaningful opportunities for children to practise making decisions and advocating for themselves. For example, children are supported to independently manage their belongings, choose where and how they would like to play, and decide what they would like to eat from their lunchboxes. Educators are always nearby to guide and support children when needed, while encouraging them to develop confidence in their own abilities. 

Personal care routines are another important way we support children’s safety and dignity. During times such as toileting and handwashing, educators ensure children’s privacy is respected while remaining available to help if needed. Children are spoken to respectfully, and educators encourage them to communicate when they need assistance. These everyday practices help children feel safe while learning important self-care skills. 

We also support children to develop the skills needed to build positive relationships with others. Through play and guided conversations, children learn how to take turns, express their feelings, listen to others and work through challenges with the support of educators. These social skills help create a respectful and supportive learning environment for everyone. 

During one of our recent walks, the children noticed the many different letterboxes along the street. This sparked a conversation about how mail works and how people communicate with one another. The children shared ideas about sending drawings and letters to our neighbours and even to another kindergarten, which we are now exploring further in the kinder.  

At Glen Bentleigh East Kindergarten, child safety is embedded in both our planned experiences and the small everyday interactions that occur throughout the day. By listening to children, supporting their independence and connecting with our community, we continue to create a kindergarten environment where every child feels safe, supported and confident to learn and grow.
