Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment for Every Child

At Glen Education Chelsea Kindergarten, the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the heart of everything we do. As we continue to embed the Child Safe Standards into our everyday practice, we are committed to creating an environment where every child feels safe, heard, respected, and protected.
During Term 1, we focused on supporting children as they settled into their new learning environment. Our Stay and Play program provided families with the opportunity to spend time in the room, helping children build confidence and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. We also worked closely with families during this transition period to ensure children felt supported both at home and at kinder. These experiences support children in developing a strong sense of belonging (EYLF Outcome 1).
Children were encouraged to develop independence and a sense of belonging through morning jobs, such as finding their name tags, choosing their own locks, putting their lunchboxes and drink bottles away, signing themselves in, and washing their hands. These small responsibilities help children feel valued and confident as active members of our kindergarten community while also supporting their growing independence and wellbeing(EYLF Outcome 3).
An important part of empowering children is giving them a voice in their environment. Together, we created our Kindergarten Agreement, where children shared their ideas about the kind of kindergarten they want. Through group discussions, children talked about being kind, helping others, sharing, and keeping each other safe. These ideas were then narrowed down to three simple agreements: care for myself, care for others, and care for our spaces. This process encourages children to express their views, participate in decision-making, and helps children recognise what safe relationships feel like, practise respectful interactions, and understand their rights to be heard and protected (EYLF Outcome 1 & 2).
Understanding emotions is a vital part of feeling safe. This term we explored a program focused on emotions and feelings. Through stories, songs, group discussions, and everyday interactions, children learned to recognise different emotions and how to express and manage their feelings. These experiences help children build empathy, develop emotional awareness, and learn positive ways to communicate their needs, supporting their social and emotional wellbeing (EYLF Outcome 3).
We know that connections with families and the wider community strengthen children’s sense of safety and belonging. This term, we celebrated Chinese New Year, The children enjoyed exploring traditions, stories, and creative experiences. We also celebrated St Patrick's Day, where children with Irish backgrounds dressed in green and participated in simple Irish dancing and music. These experiences empowered children to express themselves, share their backgrounds, and feel proud of who they are. During Harmony Week, we strengthened our connections with families by inviting them to share how to say “hello” in their home languages. This partnership with our community helps children recognise that their voices, cultures, and identities are valued, reinforcing a sense of safety and belonging. Each day we also take time for our Acknowledgement of Country, helping children learning to respect the Traditional Custodians of the land and care for their community and environment. These experiences reinforce that safe relationships are grounded in respect, trust, and understanding.
By working closely with families and our wider community, we continue to build a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels heard, respected, and confident to be themselves. These experiences support children in developing respect for diversity and a strong sense of connection to their community (EYLF Outcome 2).
