Empowering Children Through Safety, Voice and Strong Partnerships

By Alison Fisher, Early Childhood Teacher Hayley Lee, Early Childhood Educator

At Glen Education North Cheltenham Kindergarten, creating a culture where every child feels safe, supported, and confident is at the heart of everything we do. When children feel secure and valued, they are empowered to explore, learn, and build meaningful relationships with others.

A strong sense of safety is not built alone - it grows through connection. By working closely with families and the wider community, we create a shared understanding of how to support children’s wellbeing, strengthen respectful relationships, and ensure every child feels heard and protected.

Together, we play an important role in helping children understand their rights, express their needs, and recognise what safe, trusting relationships look and feel like. Through these shared efforts, we build a nurturing environment where every child can thrive with confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

Supporting Children to Understand Their Rights

At Glen Education North Cheltenham Kindergarten, we are committed to helping children understand their rights, including the right to feel safe, be heard, and have their opinions respected.

Through age-appropriate discussions, group times, and storytelling, we explore what it means to be kind, respectful, and inclusive. These experiences help children recognise that everyone deserves care and respect and that their thoughts and feelings are important. For example, through our professional development program, “Pyramid Module,” we empower children to distinguish between red choices and green choices, allowing them to make informed decisions through their interactions with peers, educators, and the learning environment.

We encourage children to share their ideas and express their needs, helping to build confidence and a sense of belonging. By fostering these understandings early, we support children in developing strong foundations in respectful relationships, empathy, and self-advocacy.

We look forward to continuing to build these important skills together with our families and community.

Empowering Children in Decision-Making

We support children to become confident decision-makers by offering choices throughout daily routines and learning experiences. Whether selecting activities, choosing resources, or deciding how to engage in play, these opportunities help children build independence and confidence in their abilities. For example, within daily routines, children are empowered to decide when to have their snack, helping them develop awareness of their own hunger and thirst.

We also guide children to express preferences and assert boundaries respectfully. Through everyday interactions, children are encouraged to use their voice, say “no” or “stop—I don’t like it” when they feel uncomfortable, and communicate their needs clearly.

By empowering children in this way, we help them develop important life skills such as confidence, resilience, and respect for themselves and others.

Encouraging Children to Express Their Needs

We support children to confidently express their feelings, needs, and ideas. Through daily interactions, we provide the language and strategies to communicate emotions, preferences, and concerns in a safe and supportive environment.

Children are encouraged to speak up if they feel uncomfortable, unsure, or upset, with the reassurance that their voice is important and will always be listened to. Educators model respectful communication and guide children in expressing themselves clearly and confidently.

By fostering these skills, we help children build emotional awareness, confidence, and a strong sense of safety and wellbeing.

Building Trust and Emotional Safety

Children learn best when they feel safe, secure, and supported. At Glen Education North Cheltenham Kindergarten, we establish predictable routines and clear expectations, helping children know what to expect each day and creating a sense of stability.

We also focus on fostering trusting relationships between children and educators. When children feel supported and understood, they are more confident to ask for help, share ideas, and explore new experiences.

By building trust and emotional safety, we help children develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of wellbeing—laying the foundation for positive relationships and successful learning.

How Families Can Support This at Home

  • Encourage your child to express their feelings and opinions and ask for help when needed.
  • Model and practice respectful communication, listening attentively, and letting children know their feelings are valued.
  • Provide choices in daily routines and small decisions to help children build decision-making skills.
  • Maintain consistent routines at home to provide stability and a sense of security.

Working together, we can help children grow confident, kind, and resilient—ready to navigate the world with a strong sense of their rights and voice.
