Creating Safe, Supportive and Inclusive Learning Environments

At Glen Education Caulfield South Kindergarten, creating a safe and supportive environment is at the heart of everything we do. We believe children learn best when they feel secure, valued, and confident to be themselves. Our daily routines, focus on relationships, and thoughtfully designed environments reflect our commitment to the Victorian Child Safe Standards, particularly promoting children’s safety, participation, inclusion, and empowerment. These practices are also closely aligned with the principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which emphasises that children’s wellbeing and sense of belonging are foundational to learning.

Flexible routines give children a sense of predictability and safety while allowing for responsiveness to individual needs. From greeting each child warmly in the morning to guided play and reflection time, routines and rituals help children feel secure and connected to the kinder community. 

This reflects EYLF Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity, as well as Child Safe Standards that support culturally safe and inclusive environments. 

Our learning environments are intentionally planned to be inclusive, engaging, and responsive, with spaces that encourage exploration, independence, and agency—

supporting EYLF Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.

Our teaching team listens, guides, and supports all children, helping them to express feelings, solve problems, and build friendships. We explicitly teach social and emotional skills, supporting children to understand their rights, develop resilience, and seek help when needed—key elements of child safety education. By fostering trust, respect, and empathy, children learn that it is safe to try new things, make mistakes, and grow. 

This aligns with EYLF Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

and reinforces Child Safe Standards that focus on equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to participate in decisions affecting them.

We nurture respectful relationships among peers, encouraging children to care for one another and celebrate diversity. Inclusive practices ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and respected, regardless of their background or abilities. This reflects both the EYLF’s commitment to equity and inclusion, and the Child Safe Standards’ focus on cultural safety, including for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

We know that safety and wellbeing extend beyond the kindergarten room. Strong partnerships with families are central to our practice and align with the EYLF principle of partnerships. By building trusting, respectful relationships with parents and carers, we gain a deeper understanding of each child’s needs, culture, and experiences. Open and ongoing communication supports families to actively contribute to decision-making and to the creation of a safe environment, reflecting Child Safe Standards that value family and community involvement.

Connections with the wider community further strengthen children’s sense of belonging and safety. Through these partnerships, children come to understand that they are part of a broader, supportive network. 

This links with EYLF Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world.
