From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade One families! This will be our last newsletter for Term 3! We hope the special men in your lives were spoiled on Sunday. Thank you to those who attended our Father's Day Liturgy on Friday. What a beautiful morning we had.  

Reminders- Across the whole school we are having a focus on improving our morning routine. All students are expected to walk in, put their bags away, do their jobs and then head out to play, without reentering the buildings until the bell. Please note that students are not actively supervised until 8:30am. If you could please reinforce this in the mornings also, we would be very appreciative.  

Hats- Please remember that children are required to wear hats as of this week until further notice. Please remember to label them.  

R U OK? Day- We will be participating in R U OK? Day this Friday the 11th of September. Students are encouraged to wear a splash of yellow on the day. This could include a yellow ribbon, hat, socks, hair accessory, wristband, or any other small item of yellow clothing. This simple gesture helps raise awareness and provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of checking in with friends, family members, and classmates. R U OK? Day reminds us that a conversation can make a significant difference. Throughout the day, the children will participate in age-appropriate activities that focus on kindness, connection, empathy, inclusion, and supporting the wellbeing of others.

📝Literacy-  

We have had some fun participating in some Procedural Writing. Last week, we wrote and followed a procedure for How to Make Popcorn, How to Make Fairy Bread, How to Wash a Car and How to Make Breakfast. This week will move into writing a recount to entertain.  

⭐Digraphs & Trigraphs we are learning: 

ey as in key 

Y as in puppy 

oi as in coin- we usually see /oi/ in the middle of words 

oy as in toy- we usually see /oy/ at the end of words 

FLoSS rule- if the word is short (one syllable) and the vowel is short and it ends in f, l or s- we double the final letter! Eg. Hiss, mess, moss, puff, huff, bell, cliff, still

➕➖Maths-  

We have been enjoying using 'hands on' materials to create and make equal groups. We then explored sharing equally between groups. We have learnt to share collections equally and identify how many objects are in each group. We have also learnt to recognise and describe arrays using rows and columns! We also know that we can represent this using repeated addition. We have also been practising skip counting forwards and backwards by 2s 5s and 10s from any starting point. Counting backwards is tricky, so lots of practise at home is encouraged. 

💙Religion –Let’s Care for Creation!  

In this unit we will explore the wonders of creation and grow in appreciation in the wonder of our creator, God. In upcoming Religion lessons, students will explore the beauty of God’s creation through hands-on experiences in nature. They will observe and investigate natural materials such as leaves, bark, flowers, stones and seeds, using their senses to discover the unique textures, patterns and details found in the world around them. Students will create nature rubbings and share their observations with their classmates. 

Students will also explore the concept of gifts and consider why gifts are given and how we care for things that are special to us. They will make connections between gifts and creation, recognising the natural world as a precious gift from God. Through discussion and reflection, students will identify practical ways they can care for our common home and be responsible stewards of creation. 

 🌍 Inquiry- All About Weather 

As we continue our learning about Weather, students will explore how temperature changes throughout the different seasons. They will learn to identify and name the four seasons, build their understanding of temperature by using descriptive weather vocabulary, and investigate how weather varies across the year. To support their learning, students will also create their own weather thermometer and use it to discuss and compare different temperatures.
