SGSMP
South Gippsland Schools Music Program
It has been a big year bustling with events for the SGSMP. To start off the year, Korumburra Instrumental Music students took part in a combined rehearsal with the Instrumental students at Leongatha Secondary College, this was a chance for our students to connect and rehearse with students from LSC. The Music staff took part in an afternoon PD with Dr Rob McWilliams to learn about the importance of advocating for Music education in schools. The next event was a workshop with the Clinch Saxophone Quartet. Students spent the time learning a new original piece “Smile with Me” and some new skills such as singing, sight-reading and improvisation. For some of the Junior Band this was their first performance and they worked exceptionally well with the other students.
On Thursday the 16th of June Korumburra Secondary College hosted their Midyear Music Concert, this was to celebrate the work our instrumental students and ensembles have completed over the Semester. Congratulations to all students who attended and performed for this and thank you to family and friends who attended.
To start off Term 3 the SGSMP ran a Music camp for the Inter/Senior Band, Vocal Group and Guitar Ensemble. The students from KSC spent 3 days with like-minded students from Leongatha, Mirboo North, Bass Coast and Foster Secondary. Our days were spent rehearsing and learning new pieces, and participating in camp activities including the giant swing, twin flying fox, archery and high ropes course. On the first evening there was a Trivia Night hosted by Nick Beale, and Darren Parker and on the second we played daggy games with Justin Abicare and danced our hearts out at a Disco hosted by Bec Bone! On the final day it was time to get ready for a concert and with around 140 students it was very much a BIG sound! Students played fantastically and all the Music staff were very proud of their achievements over this camp.
To end the year we were able to run our final combined rehearsals and concert which took place at KSC, LSC and then Mesley Hall. What a fantastic performance and we thank all the instrumental staff for their commitment in running and organising these events.
