Greetings from the School Chaplain

Term 2 has been a full on 11 weeks: there have been a wide variety of programs for students. These programs have included the Year 7 Peer Support, Positive Thinking Day and ANZAC day services.

The Year 7 Peer Support Program came to a close for another year this term. Over Semester 1 the 39 peer support leaders have worked hard to help integrate the year 7 students into high school life. It has been a great two terms filled with fun and friendship.

Chaplaincy 30th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner – Thank you to everyone who supported the Annual Chaplaincy Dinner held on Friday 27 May 2016. The dinner was held in the School VCE centre, an excellent location for a night of fun and celebration. This year Kew High School celebrated 30 years of chaplaincy. It was wonderful to hear past chaplain Greg Davies talk about his Kew High School memories from the 1990s. A celebratory cake was cut by Clare Entwisle, Deirdre Willis (original chaplaincy committee member) and Jim Reiher (ACCESS Ministries representative).

On the night we were entertained by the Kew High School musicians and served by students and SRC leaders. The dinner was generously supported by the local businesses in Kew who donated thousands of dollars of prizes for the auction and raffle. Thank you again to everyone who helped make the dinner a huge success. Special thanks to the Chaplaincy Committee, and Lynette Carter and her team who organised the stall. The Dinner definitely is a wonderful evening full of music, food and community - watch out for the event next year.

Kew High School Remembers the ANZACS – As the chaplain I had the privilege this year to work with the year 12 leaders to organise the Kew High Anzac Commemorations. It was wonderful to see a large group of SRC leaders involved in the Kew RSL Anzac march on Sunday 24 April. The School Service, held on Thursday 21 April was led by School Captains Josephine Lake and Tiger Hongmung. The service was attended by Tim Smith, the State Member for Kew, Cotham Ward Councillor Judith Voce, Yarra Bend Rotary, School Council and the Chaplaincy Committee.

Theatre Production - A Great Way to Learn – This term we have had the opportunity to have a number of great productions at the school. The Hurting Game for the year 7 students focused on bullying and Wired for the year 11 students focused on stress and mental illness. Jokers for year 8 had a focus on racism and The Stones for year 9 focused on risk taking and consequences. Students love the experience of learning in this creative way.
