Year 6 News

It has been a busy semester for everyone at BNPS at school in class and the playground, as well as off site. Some of our Year 6 students have been working on ‘Quick Writes’ and have chosen a highlight of Semester 1 to recount.

They have used various writing strategies of ‘Show Don’t Tell’, drawing on an emotion connected to a personal experience, referring to the five senses, varying sentence length, borrowing a line and using repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia and speech.

Semester 1 Interschool Sports

In Semester 1 Interschool Sports was super fun. In interschool sports you can choose a sport to do for one term so in the first term I chose volleyball. Volleyball was really fun! We won the first few matches and everyone was excited because we thought we could get to districts and get a red flag which is like a trophy for us. On the second last week of term 1 we had our last game of volleyball. Everyone was very stressed and scared that we were going to lose… one of our teammates cheered us up and motivated us, but then we got a little bit too cocky and then we got destroyed. The fact is we should have had the mindset of “Oh they won all their matches like us so they will be very, very good” but sadly we didn’t think that. After the loss, we all debriefed and said, “At least we made it this far into volleyball,” and that was the end of Term 1 Interschool sports.

In Term 2 and everyone was super tired from the holidays but we have to play inter school sports. Me and all my friends chose handball and we got in together so we were really excited to play. On the first match of handball we did really well, winning by a ton. So far we have won every single round but my friends and I reminded each other not to get too cocky or else we might get bad luck and lose on the last game like in Term 1 volleyball. In the training sessions we worked on our strategies like triangle passes which were really useful for moving around and getting passes in really fast. So overall Semester 1 was really fun for Interschool sports.

My Very First Assembly

My very first Assembly of 2023 was a big one. I was super nervous as I didn’t like public speaking at all. I walked onto the amphitheatre with my knees shaking, I felt like I was going to collapse and fall to the ground out of embarrassment.

Public speaking was not my thing and I had never done it to a full school of about 530 kids! I was absolutely petrified and scared that I would make a huge mistake and that everybody would notice it and laugh. I opened my mouth to talk but nothing came out. Eventually I started talking. I was quiet at first but became louder over time and I was eventually talking like a pro.

I felt comfortable with speaking and brave about doing so. This actually wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

World Oceans’ Day

World Oceans’ Day was probably the busiest days of Semester 1. I was a hurricane dressed up as a jellyfish. I had so many places to be and such little time to be there.

As Sustainability Captain I had so many responsibilities that had my head spinning with excitement. At the end of the day all 6 Marine Ambassadors were given the task of teaching the year 2s. I had so much fun showing everyone my jellyfish costume and if I had the chance, I would definitely do it again. I felt so special.

Swimming

I woke up from bed so excited because this was my first house sport event as Morey House Captain.

Finally, the years 4, 5 and 6 just arrived at the 50m outside pool at GESAC. It was an overcast day and I was hoping that when I dived into the cool water I would glide through the water and make District.

The first stroke of the day was freestyle. When it was up to my race I went to the marshalling area to wait for my race to start. Finally, my race started and I got up on the block and I was nervous and excited at the same time. I felt at home in the water and I came 3rd in the race which was good because the people who came ahead of me in the race are the best swimmers in the school and I made the District relay team for freestyle.

Wood house came 1st overall but every house tried their best. It was a great day, and I was very proud of how I did.

In District I came 1st in breastroke - I was flying in the water! I also came 1st in the freestyle relay and medley relay. Our school won the District Swimming Carnival for the 2nd year in a row. In Division for breastroke I came 5th, for the freestyle relay we came 3rd and for the medley relay we came 4th.

Cross Country

Sweat dripping down my face as I was on my second lap, but I knew I had to make a move. ‘I need to go to districts,’ I say to myself.  I burst into a faster pace and take over 3 more people. I know I can do it. My legs start to throb, my lungs are nearly giving up but I push through.

I’m on the last stretch when I hear people cheering me on. I sprint. I finished 13th and I was so disappointed. But then Mrs Hall came up to me and said I came 12th because someone had been disqualified. I was so relieved.

I went to all my friends and told them that I was going to districts with them. This is the second time I’ve been to districts.

Term 2 Footy

At the end of term 1, we had to pick a sport that we wanted to do in term 2, from a variety of winter sports. I picked footy and got into the team!

Interschool sport happens every Friday. We had a double header for most of our footy games and the rest were just one game. We haven’t lost a game this term and we have been beating the teams by over 100 points which is great and we are hoping that we can make it to state or regionals like we did last year.

Our team is very strong this term - we have got a guaranteed spot in Division, so our school footy team is looking good so far. We have got our last game on Friday this week so we are hoping we can win this and have a good end of term game and it will continue on next term till we are eliminated from the competition, which I hope won’t happen.

I think we have all found out our positions in the team and it’s great for the people who haven’t played before to get a chance to shine in the team. I can’t wait to get started next term!

Swimming Carnival

As we arrived at our destination, I suddenly felt my heart pump much faster than usual. I felt like there were at least one million butterflies in my stomach. As I saw all the girls getting ready, I realised I needed to get ready too, so I bolted to my swimming bag and prepared all my gear like goggles, cap and towel. Then I quickly stuffed all my clothes in my bag and rushed to the bright neon cones where all the girls were lining up.

Suddenly I heard my race being called. I felt my knees become weak, my breathing sped up and I started to feel queasy with shivers rushing down my spine. It was nearly my turn… I started to climb up the blocks and got ready to dive. I took deep breaths and imagined that I was alone at the pool and no one was watching.

Then I heard it…SPLASH!
