Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol

The Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol concluded winter co-curricular sports for another year. During this week-long event, students participated in a variety of sports and intellectual activities. The sportsmanship and discipline shown by students on the field was exceptional. All games were played in good spirit, competitive and entertaining to watch.

The Intercol commenced on Monday 22 August with Senior Chess, Senior Debating and Middle Debating.

 

The Senior Chess team convincingly defeated CBC 5 – 0. The team demonstrated excellent concentration and won their games convincingly. Congratulations to all team members - Daanyaal Shakoordeen, Zachary Dalton, Minh Trung Nguyen, Frank Snelling and Kristian Tsimouris. Blackfriars earned an early 1 – 0 lead for the Intercol Championship.

 

The Senior Debating team were the negative team on the topic “That the primary purpose of imprisonment should be rehabilitation.” It was a close and tense debate with both sides arguing well thoughtout points and ideas. The team was composed and talked with confidence and passion. Unfortunately, the team were narrowly defeated 2 – 1. Well done Khuong-Daniel Nguyen, Zachary Dalton and Connor Watson. Thankyou to Haydn Black for timekeeping during the debate. The Intercol Championship is now tied at 1 – 1.

 

The Middle Debating team were the negative team on the topic “That sporting clubs should be responsible for the behaviour of their fans.” The team put forward strong arguments and won the debate 2 – 1. Congratulations to Amir Nazari, Frank Snelling and Joseph Snelling. Thank you to TJ Afungia for timekeeping during the debate.

 

The Senior A Table Tennis team were defeated 11 – 9. Losing all the doubles matches put the team in a tough position early and were just unable to recover. An excellent effort and display of sportsmanship from all team members – Phoenix Ho, Peter Nguyen, Jason Vien, Isaiah Lee, Hieu Nguyen, An Nguyen, Phi Ai Trinh and Phi An Trinh. CBC lead the Intercol Championship 2 – 1.

 

The First XI Soccer team had many key players out in the highly-anticipated match. Blackfriars led at the half time break 1 – 0 with Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio finishing off an excellent passage of play. A red card to Blackfriars took them to 10 players for the majority of the match. Blackfriars lost the match 3 – 1. Congratulations to Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio who was awarded the Intercol Medal. CBC lead the Intercol Championship 3 – 1.

 

The Senior A Basketball team were convincingly beaten 68 – 32. Congratulations to Josh Santillana who was awarded the Intercol Medal. CBC lead the Intercol Championship 4 – 1.

 

The First XVIII Football team were pumped and ready for a big game. The team dominated in all areas on the field. Throughout the whole game, Blackfriars kicking, marking and tackling were exceptional and continually applied pressure to CBC. Blackfriars convincingly won 18.16 (124) – 8.10 (58). Congratulations to Dyson Hilder who was awarded the Intercol Medal.

The Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol is major event and one that all Blackfriars students look forward to and remember. Thankyou to the many people that made this Intercol a success!

 

8/9 State 5-a-side Indoor Soccer

On Monday 21 August, Blackfriars competed in the Southern Zone 8/9 Boys Knockout 5-a-side Indoor Soccer Competition. The team played exceptionally well and have advanced to the finals which will be played on Wednesday 27 September. Well done to Christian D’Argenio, Luka Jovanovic, Asef Mohammadi, Ryan Hanson and Hieu Nguyen.

Open Knockout Badminton Final

On Friday 25 August, Blackfriars competed in the finals of the Open Knockout Badminton Competition. Blackfriars played teams from Glenunga International High School, Henley High School and Parafield Gardens High School. Blackfriars were defeated by Glenunga in the grand final finishing runner’s up. Congratulations to coach Mrs Shelagh Vonderwall and team members Yonatan Halawa, Tony Nguyen, Vo Quoc Bao (David) Pham, Vincent Yang and Cornas Ling.

 

Year 10 Knockout Soccer

On Thursday 24 August, Blackfriars competed in Round 2 of the Year 10 Knockout Soccer against Sacred Heart College and Tatachilla Lutheran College. The team were competitive and played against tough opposition. All teams won and lost one game. Unfortunately Blackfriars did not progress based on goal difference.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Vincent Yang, Yonatan Halawa and Cornas Ling for their recent badminton achievements. Vincent won gold medals in all three Under 19 categories - singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  Yonatan reached the Semi Finals in singles, losing to Vincent. Cornas also reached the Semi Finals in U/19 singles. Cornas also competed in the Under 16 competition and was Runner Up in singles and winner in the doubles. Vincent, Yonatan and Cornas also played in the SA Open B and C grade competition. Vincent won the C Grade singles and doubles competition.
