Year 1 News

Getting to know you

The Year 1 students have had an amazing start to the year! They have reunited with their friends and have met their new teachers. During the first two weeks, students have had many opportunities to get to know each other and their teachers through class discussions, games and get to know you activities. It has been wonderful to see students enjoying themselves, getting to know everyone and settling into their new classes and classrooms! The Year 1 teachers are looking forward to seeing students continue getting to know one another 🙂.

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support - Our Matrix

In the first two weeks of school the Year 1 students revisited the CPS Behaviour Matrix! They discussed each of the school values: Kindness, Resilience and Responsibility and what these look like inside and outside of the classroom. Students had opportunities to role play each of the values and share their ideas about each value. It was fantastic to see so many Year 1 students already demonstrating the school values in the first 2 weeks of school!

Building a class team

Year 1 have had a wonderful start to the year, spending time getting to know one another and building strong, positive friendships. Together, they created our very own class mission statements:

“Year 1A are always kind to others, not afraid to make mistakes and always try their best.”

“In 1B we promise to be kind, responsible and resilient. We also promise to work together, play together and learn together”

They have enjoyed taking part in a variety of fun activities designed to help them become a supportive and caring class team. Through team games and getting-to-know-you activities, students have been practising important skills such as taking turns, listening carefully, sharing ideas and encouraging one another. It has been lovely to see the students growing in confidence and showing their mission statements in action.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support - Where can we play?

The Year 1 Cohort have been learning all about our school playground and how to use it safely and responsibly.

They explored the different areas where they are allowed to play and talked about the fun activities they can enjoy in each space. The students were excited to learn more about the playground zones and practised identifying which areas are for running games, quiet play and climbing.

They also discussed the importance of out-of-bounds areas. They looked at why certain spaces are not safe for students and what they should do if a ball or a hat goes into those areas. The students demonstrated a great understanding that they must stop, tell a teacher and never enter out-of-bounds spaces on their own.

“We shouldn’t go into the plants area, it is out of bounds.”- Manveer 1A

“We can’t play in the prep area anymore.”- Lexie 1A
