Year 6 News

Getting to know you
Students were welcomed to their Year 6 classrooms and have spent the last week getting to know their classmates and peers. Year 6 is a special year and students have been excited to get to know each other and spend time working collaboratively, and making connections and building relationships within their classrooms. Students also enjoyed some fun creative activities and class bonding games.
Buddies: The Year 6 students have been so excited to meet their Foundation/Year 1 buddies this week. Students spent time with their buddies during eating time and had a chance to get to know their buddies. They are all looking forward to spending more time together this term and throughout the year and being able to support them outside in the yard and making new friendships.
“It was so fun getting to meet our buddies, they were really shy at first but then we had a lot of fun” - Artaaz 6C
“My buddy kept trying to take my textas but I just reminded him to ask nicely and say please, and he did!” - Prish 6C
“My favourite team building game was the competition to see which team could build the tallest tower.”- Rylie 6C
School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support - Our Matrix
Students in Year 6 have been exploring the CPS Positive Behaviour Matrix. Students had discussions and participated in activities that explored our school values and what they look like in different spaces in the school. The Year 6 classes co-created Classroom Expectations Matrixes, setting clear and positive expectations for our learning spaces.
Our matrixes will be displayed in our classrooms as a daily reminder of our shared values!
“ Our school value of kindness is important, we should treat others how we want to be treated”- Zach 6C
“ Doing things even if they are hard and we need help makes us resilient”- Devrim 6C
Building a class team
The first week of any classroom is important when building a supportive and safe classroom environment for everyone. This way students can take on an active role in their learning. In Year 6 we have taken on a collaborative approach to discussing and figuring out fair and reasonable expectations for team work. We have played team-work based games like, ‘the Human Knot’, ‘Tower Building’, ‘Count 100’ and ‘Capture the flag’ where the students need to link each hand to someone different and work together to ‘untangle’ themselves. These kinds of activities allow students to listen closely to each other's solutions, value their classmates' ideas and come together in a way that fosters kindness, resilience and responsibility.
“ Having class jobs makes us more responsible”- Chelsy 6C
“ Count 100 was fun and made us communicate to figure out a better strategy to win”- Aaron 6C
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support - Where can we play?
At CPS, one of our school values is to ‘Be Responsible’ by playing in the correct areas during breaks. To help with this, students in Year 6 have been learning about our Out of Bounds Area Map and where different games can be played. For example, basketballs stay on the basketball court, and we only play football, cricket and soccer on the oval at lunch. We have participated in school walks and practiced how to make safe and responsible play choices with our friends. Families can help reinforce these expectations by discussing them at home and talking about what things they did at school at lunch.
“ We need to only plan inbounds and not go out of bounds”- Jax 6C
“ Soccer, Footy, and Cricket can only be played on the Oval and not the basketball court”- Ian 6C
Start of year announcements
Welcome back to CPS for 2026! A big year this year in Year 6. We are all looking forward to a wonderful year and celebrating some big milestones this year with our Year 6 students.
Hats: Please ensure that your child has a sunsmart hat to wear at school. We have been learning about the importance of being sun smart and protecting our skin. All students need to have a hat during term 1 and term 4. Please also send your child to school with a drink bottle as the weather has been quite warm.
Swimming: Year 6 students will begin their swimming program for 2026 in week 4 this term. Students will participate in a one week program at State Swim. Students will be placed in groups and learn freestyle, backstroke and survival breastroke. These are vital skills for our students to learn as they grow and develop into teenagers. Please ensure that students have packed a towel, bathers (if not under their uniform), goggles and a clean pair of clothes.
