Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Hi Grade 2 families, we hope you have all enjoyed the first week back for term 2.
English
We have worked on sentence structure, word types, and vocabulary. Our Year 2s used a book about children from different backgrounds to investigate similarities and differences between their lives and those of diverse environments. We used these as a base for our word and sentence work, building on descriptions using adjectives and adverbs. For example, how could you expand the sentence: Yara lives in the rainforest. What different words could you add to your sentence to give more description and answer our WWWWH questions?
Maths
We have spent some time revising place value. We used three-digit numbers as a base to look at number lines, ordering, and place value houses. We also played games like Race to 100 and Pathways. We then used our place value knowledge to work out tricky worded problems using UPSC (understand, plan, solve, check), such as the questions they might see on upcoming tests. Now we will revisit subtraction and addition, and find multiple strategies to solve these.
Wellbeing
We spent time settling back into our classrooms. We revisited our classroom agreements, adding updates and taking ownership of the ways we want to learn and be in our classroom. In technology, we practiced touch typing and had conversations about cyber safety. Our Year 2s got scenario cards and had to give advice to the person in the scenario. These sparked important conversations that could continue at home. For example, your friend gets a mean message and shows it to you. What would you do in that situation?
Thank you for all our families for remembering to bring your child’s hat for term 4.
