Year 5 News

From Tessa Patrao, Year 5D teacher
Break it down like this!
After a fun and relaxing break the students have all come back settled and ready for their last term as Year 5s. There are a lot of things to look forward to in the term ahead, we will spend more time with our buddies, learn all about Australian History in Humanities and go through the process of choosing 2027 school leaders.
Literacy
This week in reading and writing we have been focussing on noun groups. In reading we have been identifying and classifying the different types of words used in noun groups and discovered there are pointers, numerative, classifiers, describers and qualifiers. We found examples of all these types of words and contributed to a classroom word wall. In writing we have been applying this knowledge to make our writing more descriptive. We watched a short clip and broke it down into its actions. We also took the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk and broke it down into its actions. Then we identified the main nouns and created noun groups to write detailed and engaging stories.
Maths
This week in maths we have started a unit on fractions, and we have separated into groups different from our usual classes. It has been fun and challenging to learn with different peers and different teachers.
Humanities
This term in Humanities we are learning about Australian History from 1788 to 1901. We are excited to find out more about the key events that shaped early Australian history and the key people involved.
