Around the School

Inside the classroom

Welcome, Mr Mayor

Bruce Reynolds is no stranger to the sight of 300 St George’s students gathering opposite Council House for Junior and Senior Chapel each week — but last week marked his first visit inside our school.

Touring the Murray Street Campus with Mrs Campbell and School Captains Cooper and Sophie, the 19th Lord Mayor of the City of Perth (elected in October 2025) was given a student-led insight into the rise and rise of St George’s.

He met with 16 Student Leaders in the MS Library Classroom for a lively Q&A, discussing everything from civic leadership to the realities of life in the CBD. Students shared their experiences of learning in the heart of the city and raised practical ideas including digital SmartRider use and city cleanliness.

Impressed by their perspective, the Lord Mayor encouraged our students to continue leading with purpose as ambassadors for both their school and young people — and committed to following up on several of their suggestions.

Science: DNA detection

Our Year 12 ATAR Biology students visited the Harry Perkins Research Institute on Friday, 24 April. The excursion enabled the students to work in an off-campus laboratory using scientific equipment and processes, and put into practice the theory of the PCR and gel electrophoresis that scientists use to analyse DNA samples. The results of this process can lead to identifying criminals from DNA left behind at a crime scene as well as identify a genetic disease or mutation that has occurred within the DA molecule itself – saving lives and facilitating effective treatment. A fascinating and eye-opening visit as always and our Year 12s did us proud.
