Year 9 & 10
Head of Year, Mr Bradley Cotterell
It has been a very positive and purposeful start to Term Two for our Year 9 cohort. Students have returned with strong energy, presenting well in their uniform and engaging positively across all aspects of school life. We thank families for their continued support in maintaining high standards.
As students progress through the year, it is important to recognise that Year 9 represents a shift in both responsibility and influence. They are no longer the youngest members of the Senior School; rather, they are now visible role models for Year 7 and 8 students. With this comes an expectation to lead through their actions, demonstrating respect, pride, and accountability in everything they do.
A key message shared with the cohort this term has been that the small things matter. Simple habits, being prepared for class, listening the first time, moving respectfully between buildings, and conducting themselves appropriately in settings such as Chapel, have a significant cumulative impact. These everyday actions shape not only individual success but also the culture of the year group as a whole.
Academically, the term will continue to build momentum, with assessments approaching across subjects. Students are encouraged to work consistently, breaking tasks into manageable steps and avoiding the pressure that comes with leaving work until the last minute. Consistency in effort will be the key to reducing stress and improving outcomes.

We are also looking forward to the Year 9 social event; Escape This & Pizzas in Week 9, which provides a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen friendships.
Overall, the group is tracking extremely well. The focus now is on maintaining high standards consistently, showing awareness, taking pride in their actions, and continuing to lead by example in both the small and significant moments.
Term Two is a pivotal stage for our Year 10 students, as they begin to focus more deliberately on exam preparation and the transition into senior school pathways. It has been pleasing to see many students engaging positively in their learning; however, consistency in areas such as uniform and presentation remains an important focus. Wearing the school blazer correctly and maintaining high standards reflects both pride and readiness for the responsibilities ahead.
A central message this term has been that success in exams is built through consistent, manageable effort over time, rather than last-minute cramming. Students have been encouraged to adopt “chunking” strategies, breaking study into smaller, achievable tasks such as completing a set number of practice questions, revising one topic, or creating flashcards. These small steps make work less overwhelming and help build momentum.
Effective time management has also been a key focus. Using a structured study schedule, working in short, focused blocks, and establishing a regular routine allows students to balance academic demands with sport, social activities, and rest. This balance is essential, as students who manage their time well are more likely to perform at their best.
Students have also been challenged to address procrastination by simply starting, even for a short period, as action often leads to motivation. Developing a strong work ethic at home, beginning tasks early, and seeking help when needed are all critical habits at this stage. Tools such as ChatGPT can support learning when used appropriately, but they should complement, not replace, student effort.
Year 10 is ultimately a preparation year. The habits formed now, consistency, organisation, and resilience, will underpin success in Year 11 and beyond. The cohort is in a strong position, and with continued focus and commitment, they are well placed for a successful examination period and future pathway decisions
