Welcome back. We have certainly hit the ground running with a busy and exciting few weeks. As students have settled into the cooler conditions, it has been great to see the introduction of the Academic Winter Uniform, with Cowan students continuing to represent themselves and their House with pride.

Last Tuesday saw our inaugural Interhouse Cross Country Carnival at Poolgarla Parkland in Kings Park. It was a fantastic event, and awesome to see a wave of Cowan blue take on the course. Thank you to every student who got involved. An outstanding 85% of Cowan students attended on the day, an incredible effort, especially with 20mm of rain forecasted (thank you to the rain gods for staying away). This is a clear reflection of the culture, spirit and willingness to get involved that we are continuing to build within Cowan House.

A special congratulations to Matilda Lowden, our Year 7 Runner-up Champion Girl, Mitchell Clark, our Year 9 Champion Boy, and Jethro Field, our Year 11 Champion Boy on their outstanding performances.

Friday then brought another major milestone, our inaugural performances in theInterhouse Performing Arts Festival. It was a day full of rehearsals, lollies, last-minute discussions, laughs and excitement. Our Dance and Drama teams represented Cowan House with incredible pride, passion and energy. Congratulations on finishing third in Drama and fourth in Dance. More importantly, both teams gave everything for their House, which is all we can ever ask for.

As we now approach House Week, filled with quizzes, puzzles and dance challenges, I look forward to seeing Cowan students continue to embrace, excel and empower, the Cowan way.

What a start to term this has been, with St George’s Day, the Interhouse Cross Country and the Interhouse Preforming Arts Festival all happening in the same week!

With so much going on, it was brilliant seeing all the yellow shirts out and about for the Interhouse Cross Country. I am especially impressed by the students who participated, whether running comes naturally to them or, like me, it’s not their forte. I loved seeing everyone’s enthusiasm and willingness to get involved.

Of course, the crowning achievement for the House was the Interhouse Preforming Arts Festival where Lincoln took home first place in the Interhouse Drama and second in the Interhouse Dance to finish first place overall for the night! The students had been working incredibly hard, practising before and after school and it was incredible seeing all the performances from all Houses on the night. I would like to give special thanks to Holly, Nancy, Stella and Edie for choreographing the dance and taking time to teach the students. To Naima, for helping with choreography as well as writing the drama script and leading practice for Interhouse Drama. And of course, to all our students who participated on the night. Whether it was your first performance or your last, your hard work and dedication have paid off and I’m so proud of the result.

The competition is remaining extremely close this year, and it is our participation in events that will make the difference. With House Week coming up in Week 4, it is vital that we have as much representation in each event as possible and I look forward to seeing all of the Lincoln students representing our House.

We began the term by celebrating our Term 1 Mandela GOAT Award recipients. Congratulations to our Senior recipient, Cate Williams, and our Junior recipient, Tilly Feldman. Both students displayed outstanding contribution to Mandela House through leadership, participation, supporting others, showing initiative and consistently representing Mandela with pride.

It has already been a busy start to the term, with both the Interhouse Cross Country and the Interhouse Performing Arts Festival taking place. A big thank you to every Mandela student who participated in Cross Country, whether they ran, walked or supported others on the day. Special congratulations to the following students:

Our Mandela Dance and Drama teams also deserve congratulations for their performances at the Interhouse Performing Arts Festival. The effort, energy and commitment shown on the night were fantastic. Many students gave up time before and after school to rehearse, and it was clear how much pride and preparation went into each performance.

Looking ahead, we have House Week taking place next week, followed later in the term by meetings for students interested in Battle of the Bands and House Choir. I look forward to seeing Mandela students continue to get involved and support one another.
