Our Year 11 VCE VM students recently applied their Numeracy learning in the kitchen during a PDS lesson with Miss Sweeney, combining practical skills with classroom learning.
Working in teams, students baked three different batches of scones, deliberately adjusting the butter and milk quantities. This allowed them to explore how scaling and changing ratios affect the texture and rise of the scones. In the following Numeracy lesson with Mrs Schoch, students analysed their measurements, compared results and discussed how small changes in quantity can significantly impact the final product.
Students particularly enjoyed the hands-on nature of the task. After learning about scaling, measurement, and proportional reasoning in Numeracy, they were able to see these concepts applied in real-world contexts. The activity also strengthened teamwork, planning and reflection skills developed in PDS.
It was a great example of VCE VM applied learning in action: purposeful, practical and engaging.
