What's Cooking?
Inside Food Tech
The Year 10 Food Technologies students recently completed their assessment task, where they were challenged to recreate and adapt iconic Australian dishes while considering flavour, presentation, cultural influences, and practical cooking skills.
Throughout the practical lessons, students demonstrated excellent creativity, teamwork, and organisation in the kitchen. A wide variety of Australian-inspired dishes were recreated, including gourmet burgers, steak sandwiches, loaded wraps, savoury skewers, cupcakes, and modern takes on classic comfort foods. Students carefully planned their recipes, managed their time effectively, and worked collaboratively to bring their ideas to life.

Many groups showcased strong practical skills, particularly when working with meat preparation, sauce-making, baking, presentation, and garnishing techniques. Students also demonstrated increasing confidence when using kitchen equipment safely and independently. It was fantastic to see students taking pride in plating and presenting their dishes professionally.
The assessment encouraged students to think critically about how food reflects Australian culture and how iconic dishes can be modernised for different audiences and tastes. The quality of the final dishes highlighted the growing confidence and skill development of the Year 10 cohort.
Overall, the Year 10 students should be extremely proud of their efforts. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to experiment with flavours and presentation resulted in a highly successful practical assessment and an impressive showcase of culinary talent.
