Q & A with Miss Eliza Webb

When Eliza Webb graduated from St George's in 2020, she left as a proud Sync Swim champion, Chapel and Community Service Captain and a graduate with a passion for Mathematics.
Six years later, Miss Webb is back — this time at the front of the class teaching maths and as tutor of her old PCG (Mandela 5 with Ms Scheele).
“Returning to St George’s as a teacher was a little daunting at first,” she told The Dragon “but the welcoming and supportive community quickly made me feel at home.”
While much has changed, some things remain reassuringly familiar. “The biggest change has been the growth of the school and the incredible range of opportunities now available for students,” she said.
“What still feels the same is the strong sense of community. St George’s has always had a welcoming, family-like atmosphere where everyone feels known and supported. And the spaghetti and meatballs are still just as good as I remember.’’
Miss Webb was inspired to become a teacher by her teachers, in particular her Apps teacher Ms Chloe Hewitt, now Head of Mathematics and a Mandela PCG tutor also.
“Ms Hewitt helped me develop a genuine appreciation for mathematics and showed me just how much of a difference a great teacher can make to a student's school experience,”
Miss Webb said.
“Her passion for teaching inspired me to pursue a degree in Mathematics Education.”
Now Miss Webb is determined to have the same impact on her own students. “I wanted to help make mathematics feel less intimidating and more accessible for all students,” she said.
“Maths develops essential life skills, and I'm passionate about helping students realise that they are capable of succeeding in it.”
Among Miss Webb's fondest memories as a student is winning Sync Swim in Year 12 after years of dedication and teamwork.
“We'd put a lot of work into it over the years, so taking out the win in our final year was special,”
she recalled. “There's something pretty satisfying about leaving St George's as a Sync Swim champion.”
In Year 11, Miss Webb applied to be Community Service Captain and was made Chapel Captain, too. These days, some of her favourite moments take place during PCG.
“I love seeing my PCG group every morning. It's a chance to catch up, celebrate successes and start the day together,” she said.
“We also take our House events very seriously and are always aiming to be the best PCG.”
Outside the classroom, Miss Webb’s passion is theatre. Before becoming a teacher, she spent several years performing and directing productions and continues to enjoy being involved in the creative arts.
“Like me, I think students will remember the friendships they built and the community that comes with being part of St George's,” she said.
“The House activities, special events and friendly competition create memories that stay with you long after you graduate.”
