Year 9: Looking after ourselves and finishing the term strong

As we move through the second half of the term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on an important presentation that Year 9 recently attended and share some reminders as we approach the final weeks of the semester.

Students participated in a session delivered by ‘A Stitch in Time’, which focused on practical strategies for maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing. One of the key messages was that looking after our mental health is often about consistently doing the simple things well. The presenter outlined five important foundations for good mental health: regular physical activity, quality sleep, good nutrition, spending time outdoors, and developing emotional regulation skills.

Students learned that physical activity does not need to be competitive to be effective. Whether it is playing sport, going for a walk, going to the gym, or simply being active outdoors, movement provides a healthy outlet for stress and negative emotions. The importance of getting 8–10 hours of sleep each night was also highlighted, with poor sleep affecting concentration, emotional wellbeing, and overall performance at school.

Another important discussion centred on managing what was referred to as our "Monkey Mind", the tendency to jump to conclusions, make assumptions about others, or focus on negative thoughts. Students explored strategies such as redirecting attention, reframing situations, practising gratitude, and taking a moment to consider the full context before reacting. We also discussed emotional regulation, recognising that emotions themselves are neither good nor bad, but that the way we respond to them matters. Practical techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, journalling, and taking a short walk were suggested as effective tools.

As we continue through the term, I encourage students to apply these strategies both at school and at home. Looking after your wellbeing creates the foundation for success in all areas of life.

We are also looking forward to our Year 9 social event in Week 9, where students will enjoy pizza and an escape room challenge together. It promises to be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen friendships and celebrate a successful semester.

The cohort continues to perform extremely well, and I am proud of the way students are representing themselves and the school. The challenge now is to remain consistent in the small things, maintaining high standards, supporting one another, and finishing the term with the same positive attitude and effort that has characterised such a strong start.

Let’s keep looking after ourselves, supporting each other, and making these final weeks count.

Year 10: Exams, responsibility and preparing for the future

As we approach the final weeks of the term, Year 10 students find themselves at an important point in the year. Exams are now just around the corner, and students should be focusing on the preparation strategies we have discussed throughout the term. While it can be tempting to leave revision until the last minute, the most successful students are often those who work consistently, break tasks into manageable chunks, and develop positive study habits over time.

In recent sessions, we have explored practical strategies for exam preparation, including creating realistic study schedules, overcoming procrastination, using active study techniques, and maintaining a healthy balance between school, sport, family, and social commitments. Students have been encouraged to focus on small, achievable goals each day rather than becoming overwhelmed by the bigger picture. Consistent effort now will not only help with upcoming exams but will also lay the foundations for success in senior school.

Alongside exam preparation, students participated in our Protective Behaviours lessons, focusing on Rights and Responsibilities. Through a range of discussions and real-world scenarios, students explored the rights they have at school, in the workplace, and within the community. These included the right to feel safe, be treated with dignity and respect, express their opinions appropriately, and learn in a supportive environment. We also examined the responsibilities that accompany these rights, including treating others respectfully, following reasonable instructions, respecting boundaries, and speaking up when something feels unsafe or unfair.

As students begin considering future pathways and subject selections, it is important to remember that the effort invested now can create opportunities later. Whether pursuing an ATAR pathway, vocational studies, apprenticeships, or other career options, strong work habits and personal responsibility remain key ingredients for success.

I wish all Year 10 students the very best for their upcoming exams. Continue to work hard, support one another, and take pride in the way you represent yourselves and our school. The future is built through the choices and effort you make today.
