Highlighting 7P

ENGLISH

This term, our Year 7 English students have been busy exploring poetry and film. We began by learning about different poetic forms, structures and language devices, including similes, metaphors, personification, rhyme and alliteration. Students then put their learning into practice by planning, drafting and publishing their own poems. One of the highlights was hearing students perform their poems, with many showing great creativity and confidence. Students have also enjoyed playing Wordle, Connections and Contexto, as well as our weekly ‘Beat the Teacher’ competitions.

We have now begun our film study of Paper Planes. So far, students have enjoyed watching the film and following Dylan’s journey as he discovers a talent for making and flying paper planes. To celebrate finishing the film, students designed and created their own paper planes before competing to see whose plane could fly the furthest. This was a fun and engaging way to connect with the film. Over the coming weeks, we will explore the film’s characters, themes and important messages in greater detail. 

MATHS 

In maths this term 7P have been working hard learning about Algebra and Geometry. In Algebra they learnt about variables, like terms, solving equations, and creating patterns. All students showed a growth in their knowledge and ability. Recently students have been learning how to use protractors to measure angles accurately, and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Blooket is a program we use to revise learnt concepts and skills in a fun online game, and for many students this brings out their competitiveness to win. The hope is that all students become proficient with knowing their basic maths facts that they can apply to all topics they are learning

PE/HEALTH 

It has been an incredible term for 7P, a class that consistently brings a fantastic vibe and an endless supply of energy to every single lesson! In Physical Education, the students have been diving into dynamic invasion games, where they have rapidly developed their spatial awareness, strategic passing, and collaborative teamwork. Meanwhile, in Health, they have tried their best to demonstrate maturity and empathy while navigating complex, vital topics within our respectful relationships and sex education units. Naturally we have all shared a handful of giggles. A truly memorable highlight occurred just this week during a class-wide challenge: the monumental struggle of trying to work in absolute silence for a mere two minutes. While silent individual work might not be their ultimate strength, their ability to bounce back with laughter and focus showed just how connected they are as a group. As their teacher, what I am most proud of is their absolute enthusiasm for life and learning; they approach every challenge with open minds and bright smiles.

HUMANITIES 

In 7P Humanities, students have enjoyed participating in mock elections and researching famous Australians. Over the past few weeks, they have begun exploring the fascinating history of Ancient China. Students have investigated the influence of Ancient China, including its inventions, technologies and the important role of the Silk Road in spreading ideas and technology around the world. They have also explored significant achievements such as the Great Wall of China, with students proudly building their own Great Wall replicas.

More recently, students have been researching an ancient Chinese invention and are preparing a poster or PowerPoint presentation to explain its development, purpose, impact and connection to the Silk Road. It has been wonderful to see students engaging with the topic and developing their research, creativity and presentation skills.

SCIENCE

This term in Science, 7P have been exploring the properties of substances, mixtures and different separation techniques. Students particularly enjoyed hands-on practical activities, including creating a density tower and investigating filtration. It has been great to see the students developing their confidence, curiosity and practical investigation skills throughout the term. We are proud of the effort and progress they have shown. The class is now looking forward to their next CAT, where they will design and conduct an experiment on water filtration. 

ART

7P have been exploring line, colour and tone to create a range of visual illusions using different types of pencils and a variety of rendering techniques. Through this process, students have been experimenting with how shading, texture and contrast can change the appearance of an image and create interesting effects. We are now moving into ceramics, where students are designing and developing their own ceramic pieces with a focus on texture, form and shape. They are exploring the possibilities of clay by creating pinch pot creatures and sculptures, considering how different textures and forms can be used to give their artworks character and expression.

Year 7 Woodworking

The year 7 students are making a pencil case using hand tools and a laser engraver to finish it off. Don't they look great!
