Support Faculty

What a wonderful and busy start to Term 3 we have had! Students have settled back into their routines beautifully and have enjoyed getting back into learning, connecting with their classmates and making the most of the opportunities the term has to offer.

GALMATIC! 

Students enjoyed a hands-on session learning basic car maintenance skills like checking and changing tyres, checking and refilling the oil levels,  checking and refilling water levels, and understanding what’s under the bonnet and how regular maintenance keeps vehicles safe and running smoothly.

It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved, asking questions and building practical skills for the future. 

A big thank you to the Galmatic team for delivering such an informative and interactive workshop!

LOVE BITES

The Love Bites program was delivered to all students in the Support Unit this term to build understanding of respectful relationships, consent, communication, boundaries and personal safety. 

Sessions were adapted to suit students’ individual learning needs, using accessible language, visual supports and practical activities. The program aimed to help students recognise healthy and unhealthy behaviours, understand their rights and develop the skills and confidence to make safe and respectful choices in relationships.

The staff and students of the support unit would like to extend our thanks to Lucy & Kate for delivering this program to us.

FGHS Boccia Team

A talented group of students proudly represented FGHS at the State Boccia Competition in Maitland, competing in the first round of the tournament. Students earned their positions on the school team through a series of competitive trials and showed outstanding commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The FGHS team consisted of Dakota Staink (Team Manager), Tyson Searant (Coach), Noah Lowe (Equipment Coordinator), Hamish McCall (Team Captain), Brody Hackett, Jessica Rogers, Spencer Clarke, Sophie Bridge and Logan Jungnickel.

Across the day, the team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, fair play and respect for their opponents, securing three impressive wins. Their determination and team spirit remained strong throughout every match, including the three games they narrowly lost. Finishing fourth overall out of twelve teams, the team narrowly missed a top-three placing. FGHS is incredibly proud of the students' efforts, resilience and positive attitude, and the way they represented the school throughout the competition.

Australian Reptile Park - S1

Students in S1 visited the Australian Wildlife Park to develop their independence and confidence in a community setting. 

Students had the opportunity to explore the park, observe a variety of Australian wildlife and practise important community skills such as following directions, staying with the group, interacting appropriately with others and making choices in a public environment. The excursion provided a fun and meaningful opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom while building their social, communication and life skills.

Fighterworld - S3, S6 & S11 

Students in S3, S6 and S11 had an exciting opportunity to visit Fighter World in Williamtown for a fantastic day of hands-on learning. Students explored the history of aviation and discovered how aircraft and technology have changed over time. They had the opportunity to get up close to a range of aircraft and learn more about their purpose, history and the important role they have played in aviation.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was getting to see a RAAF F-35A Lightning II practising its aerobatic display ahead of the upcoming Pacific Airshow.

It was an amazing experience to see such an impressive aircraft in action while learning about the technology behind it. The unexpected display certainly added an extra special highlight to an already fantastic excursion!

Our students represented the school beautifully with their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the day. It was a wonderful learning experience and everyone had a fantastic time!

Japanese Tanabata Festival- S2

Students in S2 participated in the Japanese Garden Tanabata Festival with Yumi San, engaging in a range of cultural activities and learning about the traditions and significance of Tanabata. Students had the opportunity to experience Japanese culture, create traditional decorations and celebrate the festival in a welcoming and hands-on environment.

Wollombi Historical Village - S2

During Term 3, students in S2 visited Wollombi Historical Village, exploring local history and learning about life in the past. Students had the opportunity to visit historical sites, engage with historical artefacts and develop their understanding of the local community and its history. Students had a wonderful time and represented the school well. 

Starstruck 2026

In June, a number of students from the Support Unit participated in the annual Starstruck performance at Newcastle Entertainment Centre, showcasing their talents and enthusiasm. 

Students worked together to practise their routines, build confidence and develop teamwork skills while enjoying the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. 

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students from Support who participated in this event. Well done to Anastasia and Tyson!

Coastal Data Exploration - S7 & S13 

S7 headed to Newcastle to develop their scientific research skills through a hands-on investigation. 

Students used information provided by the Surf Life Saving Club to collect and compare data, make observations, and identify information that could be measured.

It was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect science to everyday life and see how primary data can be gathered and used in a real scientific investigation.

Return & Earn - S12

S12 continues to participate in the Return and Earn program by collecting and returning eligible cans and bottles. 

This activity provides valuable opportunities to develop quality community access skills, including navigating community spaces, following routines, interacting appropriately with members of our school and of the public, handling money and making responsible choices. 

Through regular participation, S12 is building greater confidence, independence and practical skills for everyday community life. Well Done to S12 for continuing such a great initiative. 

FGHS Ten Pin Bowling Team 

Our FGHS school ten pin bowling team are competing on Friday 21/8/2026 at Terrace Strike Zone. Students will represent our school at the State Ten Pin Bowling Competition held in Raymond Terrace, where the first round of competition will take place. The students earned their place on the school team by responding to school notices.

The FGHS team consists of Noah Lowe, Maddison Beer, Jessiah Dooley, Logan Jungnickel and Tyson Searant.

We wish the students the very best of luck in the competition!

Farewell for now & Congratulations

A huge congratulations to Ms Olivia Hay and Miss Tori Hill, as they prepare to welcome their beautiful babies into the world!  Miss Hay will be welcoming her little one towards the end of Term 3, with Miss Hill following in early Term 4. We wish you both all the very best for this exciting next chapter and can’t wait to meet your little bundles of joy!
