PD/H/PE

Term 3 is an exciting time in PDHPE, with students involved in a wide range of learning, sporting and extracurricular opportunities. Alongside their regular Health and Movement lessons, students have been participating in school sport, representative opportunities and practical experiences that encourage teamwork, participation, resilience and a positive approach to physical activity. It has been fantastic to see students embracing these opportunities and demonstrating the school values both in and beyond the classroom.
Year 7 students are studying Relationships in Health and Territory Games in Movement. Students are developing their understanding of healthy and respectful relationships, communication and cooperation, while applying movement skills and game strategies such as creating space, positioning and working effectively with teammates.
Year 8 students are exploring Mental Health in Health and Transfer Skills in Movement. These units focus on understanding factors that influence mental health and wellbeing, identifying strategies and support networks, and developing students’ ability to transfer movement skills and strategies across a range of physical activities and games.
Year 9 students are completing Fitness for Health, an integrated Health and Movement unit. Students are exploring the relationship between physical fitness, health and wellbeing while developing their understanding of fitness components, training principles and strategies to improve and monitor their fitness. Students will also have opportunities to set personal goals and apply their learning through practical fitness activities.
Year 10 students are studying Relationships and Sexual Health in Health and Game Play in Movement. Students are developing their understanding of healthy relationships, communication, consent, respectful behaviours and informed decision-making, while also refining their movement skills, tactical awareness and decision-making through a range of game-based activities.
Some PDHPE units involve sensitive or mature subject matter, including relationships, sexual health, mental health and personal wellbeing. These topics are taught in an age-appropriate, respectful and supportive learning environment in line with NSW syllabus requirements, with a strong focus on student wellbeing, informed decision-making, respectful discussion and the development of practical skills for life.
We recognise that some topics may prompt questions or conversations at home, and we encourage families to continue these conversations with their children in a supportive and respectful way. We also encourage students to speak with their teachers or trusted adults if they have questions or concerns arising from their learning.
We look forward to another term of learning, participation and achievement across PDHPE, and to seeing our students continue to get involved in the many opportunities available to them both within and beyond the classroom.

11SLR Golf Excursion
Year 11 Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR) students recently swapped the classroom for the driving range, enjoying an exciting excursion to Rippit Golf. The excursion provided students with the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a real-world recreational setting. Throughout the day, students participated in a range of golf-based activities, developing their movement skills, coordination, accuracy and technique, while also learning more about the recreational and social benefits of participating in physical activity.
A highlight of the excursion was seeing students challenge themselves, encourage their peers and develop their skills throughout the session. There were plenty of impressive shots, a few wayward ones, and lots of laughs along the way! The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to take their learning beyond the classroom and experience firsthand the value of sport and recreation in promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
Zone Athletics Carnival
On the 22nd of June, our students proudly represented the school at the Zone Athletics Carnival held at Fearnley Dawes Athletics Track in Newcastle.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated outstanding athleticism, sportsmanship, enthusiasm and commitment, giving their best effort in every event. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another and embracing the spirit of competition.
Congratulations to all students who competed and represented our school so positively. A special congratulations to those students who have qualified to progress to the Regional Athletics Carnival.
Year 11 Health and Movement Science (HMS)
HMS students have recently taken their learning beyond the classroom through a Collaborative Investigation exploring the relationship between psychology, physiological responses and performance during aerobic exercise.
Working in research teams, students investigated the question: “To what extent do psychological strategies influence physiological responses and performance during aerobic exercise?” Each group selected a psychological strategy, such as goal setting, self-talk, imagery, music, positive reinforcement or arousal regulation, and designed a scientific investigation to examine its influence on exercise performance.
Students worked collaboratively to plan and conduct fitness testing, collect physiological and performance data, and analyse their results. Throughout the investigation, they considered important elements of scientific research including variables, reliability, validity, ethical practice and the development of an appropriate research method.
The investigation provided students with an opportunity to apply HMS concepts in a practical setting while developing skills in collaboration, problem-solving, data analysis and scientific communication. Rather than simply learning about the relationship between psychology and performance, students were able to investigate it firsthand and use their own evidence to draw conclusions.
This collaborative learning experience reflects the practical and inquiry-based nature of the new Health and Movement Science course and has provided Year 11 students with valuable skills that they will continue to develop throughout their senior studies.
