Term 3 is a massive term for Science, there is always a lot going on. Here are just some of the things that are happening or have already happened in the world of Science!

Museum of Human Disease Excursion

Last week, Mrs Andruschak took our Y12 Biology students on a trip to the Museum of Human Disease. I know it sounds a bit gross, but according to all who went on the excursion it was actually quite fun! Getting to examine samples of the effects of disease on various human body parts was obviously fascinating to those studying biology. 

Science Week

Week 5 was when we got to celebrate Science Week at Francis Greenway. The theme for this year was:

On the Thursday, we had our Science Week Quiz in D1. Students got to show off their amazing knowledge of scientific facts they have accumulated over the years, and we got to give out some great prizes!

In class, we had some engaging stage-based practical activities. Year 7 made some grass heads - imagine grass seeds placed in some soil inside a cut-off leg from pantyhose. Add some googly eyes, paint on a face and there is your grass head. 

Now I know what many of you are thinking - there is no grass. They look a little bit like Mr Latta after a summer haircut. But after a week or so, there should be enough grass to make even Mr Pascoe proud! We will post updates once they need a trim. 

Year 8 germinated seeds inside a plastic bag. Basically they were making a little terrarium, as each bag contained water, a bean seed and something for the seed to grow in. Leave the bag in sunlight and watch the seeds grow into plants! Stay tuned for updates on their progress!

Years 9 and 10 made Periodic Table element cards on biscuits! Atoms and elements could be seen as the seeds which make up matter, so we had our Stage 5 students choose an element to represent on their biscuit. Below are a selection of 10/4's creations.

Y10 VALID

Year 10's final assessment task is coming up soon in Week 7. It is the VALID assessment, where students across the state complete an online series of questions based on the Stage 5 Science curriculum. The task will be completed in the hall Monday the 31st of August, periods 2 and 3. Can you encourage your students to please bring a charged device to school on the day, along with headphones to access the questions audibly. We only have a limited number of laptops that we can provide for students to complete the task.
