High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

At Francis Greenway High School, we are proud to provide a wide range of enriching opportunities for students identified within the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program. Through targeted programs, enrichment activities and authentic learning experiences, students are supported to develop their strengths across the four HPGE domains: Intellectual, Creative, Physical and Social-Emotional.

We encourage students and families to explore the many opportunities available throughout the year and get involved in the vibrant learning experiences offered at FGHS.

HPGE Year 7 Classes – 2027

We are excited to welcome the next group of talented and curious learners to our HPGE Year 7 classes in 2027! A huge thank you to all the budding students who put forward an application to be part of these two special classes at Francis Greenway High School. We are looking forward to reading all of the many applications and learning more about each of you! We will be in touch with all students early in Term 4 with further information. 

So, what is HPGE? High Potential and Gifted Education supports students who have the potential to learn and develop skills at a faster rate than their peers. Students can demonstrate high potential across a range of areas, including intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.

Our HPGE classes are all about challenge, creativity and opportunity. Students will have the chance to:

• Dive into enriched and challenging learning experiences
• Develop creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Collaborate with like-minded peers
• Develop leadership skills and extend their individual talents

HPGE in NSW public schools is now brought together under the banner of the Inspire program, which aims to provide high-potential students with opportunities to thrive, extend their skills and reach their full potential.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2027 and can't wait to see our new HPGE students inspire, create, challenge themselves and shine!

HPGE Creative Community Project Update

Stage 4 HPGE Creative Domain students have been busy bringing their creativity to life through an exciting community project in partnership with Beresfield Parish!

Students have designed a fantastic functional street library for the local community, developing their creative and practical artmaking skills along the way. Working alongside a Visual Arts specialist, they explored design ideas, experimented with materials and learned new construction techniques while responding to a real-world brief.

The project has been a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate, problem-solve, experiment and get creative while making something meaningful for their local community. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and creativity!

The finished street library will be officially unveiled on Thursday 27 August at Beresfield Anglican Parish. We can't wait to see the students' amazing work out in the community!

Art Club Update – New Day & Location

Calling all budding artists! Art Club has a new day and a new home. From now on, Art Club will run every Wednesday at first break in E7.

Students can drop in for some extra creative time, whether they are working on class projects, assessment tasks, catching up on work or creating their own personal artworks and mixed media masterpieces.

Art Club is a relaxed and welcoming space to experiment with materials, develop creative skills and enjoy making art with friends. Whether you need a little help, want to catch up or simply love creating, everyone is welcome! Come along, get creative and make something amazing!

Photo Club – Get Behind the Lens!

New CAPA Club!

Ready to see the school through a different lens? Photo Club is the perfect place to get creative, build your photography skills and have fun with a camera!

When: Every Wednesday during second break

Where: E6

Whether you're a photography pro or just getting started, everyone is welcome! You’ll have the chance to:

• Learn cool composition techniques
• Practise taking great photos
• Get hands-on with specialist equipment, including DSLR cameras

Want to take your photography to the next level? Students who join Photo Club can also become part of the Photo Crew, capturing the action at exciting school events such as PBL Assemblies, NAIDOC Day and the Illuminate Showcase.

Love photography? Love being creative? Want to be behind the lens? Come along and join the Photo Club!

Art Matters Workshop

We are excited to see four of our students heading off to the Art Matters Workshop! This exciting two-day experience gives students the opportunity to dive into the world of Visual Arts, develop their creative skills and work alongside professional artists and art education experts.

The workshop encourages students to experiment, explore new ideas and discover how art can be used to communicate and respond to contemporary issues. Students will have the chance to get hands-on with a range of artmaking materials and techniques, with workshops potentially exploring areas such as painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, mixed media and digital media.

It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to extend their skills, try something new and be inspired by artists and other creative young people. We can't wait to hear all about their creative adventures and see what they create!

Taster Thursdays – Visual Arts Transition Day

We are getting creative with Taster Thursdays! Running in Week 4 of Term 4, this exciting transition day will welcome students from our local primary schools to FGHS for a fun-filled day of exploring high school life and trying out a range of different subjects through engaging, hands-on activities.

CAPA staff will be getting involved in the action, with seven of our HPGE Stage 5 students stepping up to help run the activities on the day. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to try something new, get creative and experience what learning at FGHS has to offer.

We can't wait to welcome our future students to FGHS, give them a taste of high school life and see them getting stuck into the activities!

Illuminate – CAPA & TAS Showcase 

What a night! Our bi-annual Illuminate CAPA/TAS Showcase was a fantastic celebration of the incredible talent, creativity and hard work of our students at FGHS.

The evening was packed with something for everyone, including amazing art displays, dance, drama and music performances, as well as impressive design projects, timber and metalwork. It was wonderful to see our students' skills and creativity on display and to celebrate the many hours of dedication that went into creating and preparing their work.

A huge congratulations to all of our talented students and a big thank you to everyone who helped make the night such a success. We are so proud of the creativity, passion and talent showcased by our CAPA and TAS students!

Inquisitive Minds – Creating Positive Mathematical Experiences

Our students recently had the opportunity to get stuck into some fun, hands-on Mathematics through the Inquisitive Minds Program! 

The program is designed to challenge students through engaging problem-solving activities that encourage them to think creatively, work collaboratively and look at Mathematics from a different perspective. Rather than just finding the answer, students were encouraged to explore, experiment and think about how they could solve a problem.

It was fantastic to see our students embracing the challenges, sharing ideas and putting their mathematical thinking skills to the test. Who knew Maths could be this much fun?!

Zone Basketball 

What a fantastic effort from our Under 15s Boys Basketball team at the Zone Basketball Carnival! Our students took on schools from across the zone and showed plenty of skill, teamwork and determination throughout the day.

The boys were on fire, finishing the carnival undefeated with four fantastic wins! Congratulations to all of the students who represented FGHS and did an amazing job on the court. 

Chess Club – Make Your Move!

Love a challenge? Enjoy a good game of strategy? 

Chess Club is the place to put your skills to the test, learn new strategies and challenge your friends!

Whether you're a chess master or you've never played before, everyone is welcome! Come along to:

• Learn the basics and improve your game
• Develop your strategy and problem-solving skills
• Challenge friends to a game
• Take part in friendly competitions and tournaments

Jam Session – Make Some Music!

Love music? Want to play with other like-minded musos?

Come along to our Jam Sessions and make some music together! Jam sessions are a relaxed and informal way to play, experiment with new ideas and connect with other musicians.

When: Every day during Second Break

Where: A3

Whether you’re a guitarist, drummer, singer, keyboard player or play another instrument, come along and have a jam!

• Play music with other students
• Try out new ideas and sounds
• Build your confidence and skills
• Meet other musicians and have fun

No preparation needed! Just bring your instrument or borrow one of ours, bring your ideas and your love of music!

Bandwidth 2026 – Rock the Hunter Theatre!

Ready to turn up the volume?

Are you interested in being part of a band! Or already have a band? School bands have the chance to hit the stage at Bandwidth 2026, a high school rock band competition hosted by the Hunter School of the Performing Arts (HSPA) in Broadmeadow.

When: Friday 13 November 2026, Term 4, Week 5

Where: Hunter Theatre, HSPA

Bandwidth is all about celebrating young musicians, showcasing original talent and giving school bands the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre environment.

And there are some awesome prizes up for grabs, including a professionally recorded single and music video, interviews with Newcastle Live, digital promotion packages and music vouchers!
