LANGUAGE - JAPANESE (日本語)

Konnichi wa! 

In the classroom, outdoors in the Japanese Cultural Garden and on excursions, our students have embraced language learning while enjoying traditional Japanese summer festival activities, origami and games. 

Year 12 Japanese Beginners

Year 12 students will sit their HSC Speaking Examination on the 1st September. They recently attended the inaugural HSC Languages Preparation Day at the University of Newcastle along with students from around the Hunter Region studying Japanese, French and Chinese. This was an awesome opportunity for them to meet other students with a love of languages and to practise speaking in situations that simulate the HSC Speaking Examination. 

Year 11 Japanese Beginners

Year 11 travelled to the Japan Foundation in Sydney for an immersive day in Japanese language and culture. Students engaged enthusiastically in the cultural activities and repeatedly challenged themselves to authentically interact in Japanese. A highlight was dressing in traditional yukata (cotton kimono) and doing bon odori (traditional dancing).

Year 11 students will sit their Preliminary Examination at the end of this term. The examination has four sections to test students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking language skills.

Year 7 Japanese

Year 7 attended the inaugural Global Futures Day at the University of Newcastle. Students learnt about possible future experiences connected to the study of languages. They had the opportunity to interact with students from other schools in the region who also love languages and culture. One team was successful in winning a quiz about the day’s events.

Tanabata Star Festival

Tanabata is a summer festival in Japan. A festival tradition is to write tanzaku (wishes) and hang them on bamboo branches. We have a magnificent clumping bamboo tree in the Japanese Cultural Garden, perfect for tanzaku. Hopefully, the lucky bamboo will make all of their wishes come true. 

Technology GO!! 

Congratulations to the students who are consistently arriving to lessons with charged devices, ready for learning. It is important that devices are charged each evening so students have access to their Google Classroom and other language learning sites. 

All students learning Japanese at FGHS have access to Japanese content on Education Perfect. This learning tool is used in the classroom but is also a great tool that students can access anytime if they want to reinforce and/or extend language learned in class.
