EXCEL Academic Program

EXCEL Academic Debating Competition

On Thursday 11 June, the College hosted an exciting student Debating Competition, bringing together talented speakers from all the EXCEL Academic classes, including students from 7E, 8E and 9E, to demonstrate their public speaking, critical thinking and persuasive communication skills.

The competition was held in the College STEM centre and featured 20 teams competing in a series of challenging debates on contemporary topics.

Throughout the morning, students were required to research their assigned debate topics, construct logical arguments and respond effectively to opposing viewpoints. Topics ranged from the impact of new technologies on our creativity, the benefits of learning a second language and compulsory military conscription.

Throughout the event, participants displayed the College values of Persistence, Community Excellence and Respect. Debaters impressed the judges and audience members with their well-researched arguments, clear delivery and ability to think quickly under pressure. The competition provided students with an excellent opportunity to develop valuable life skills, including public speaking, critical analysis, collaboration and respectful dialogue.

A panel of teachers evaluated each debate based on the material, method and manner of the speakers and the team organisation, delivery, rebuttal skills and overall effectiveness.

After several closely contested rounds, the winning teams emerged with strong performances that demonstrated exceptional reasoning and persuasive speaking abilities. The individual winning speakers were provided with canteen vouchers and the winning teams received a certificate for each student in the debating team.

In addition to celebrating the winners, the event highlighted the importance of debating as a platform for students to express their ideas, engage with diverse perspectives and build confidence in communicating their views. The audience members also benefited from hearing thoughtful discussions on important issues affecting society today.

The College would like to congratulate all participants for their dedication, preparation and sportsmanship. Special thanks go to the teachers, judges and student volunteers whose support contributed to the success of the competition.

The Student Debating Competition was a memorable event that showcased the academic excellence and leadership potential of our students. We look forward to seeing even more enthusiastic participation in future debating events.
